Soft cover. Condition: Fine. Tykociner, Joseph Tykocinski (Joseph Tykocinski- Tykociner), "Photographic recording and photoelectric reproduction of sound," offprint, Transactions of the Society of Motion Picture Engineers", (SMPE,) no. 16, pp 90-119, 1923. 32 illustrations (photos and diagrams) including two full-page photos of closeups of the motion picture film with sound. Original wrappers, signed "with compliments from the author". Fine copy. (The offprint is dated at the end (in text) April 1923. [++] Images also include modulation of the mercury vapor arc light and application for recording sound on film; photos of the camera/"phonatinion" ("for producing talking motion pictures"; diagrams and photos of the all-important Kunz photoelectric cell, and others. [++] This is an "abstract" of a lecture "held on June 9, 1922, before the joint meeting of the Urbana Section of the AIEE and the Electrical Engineering Society. The lecture was accompanied by experiments and demonstration of the apparatus" which was the first public demonstration of the sound-on-film motion picture. [++] "By 1922 he had successfully created the first electronic sound on film which he called a "talkie." However, due to Illinois politics over who would control the patents on Tykociner's invention, his dream of commercializing sound on film was never brought to fruition."--Illinois Distributed Museum [++] "The first public demonstration of sound recorded simultaneously with pictures on film took place at the Urbana campus on June 9, 1922. Joseph T. Tykociner's double-feature motion picture included ringing a bell and reading the Gettysburg Address."--Historical Marker Database [++] "Today [June 9] in 1922, Joseph Tykociński-Tykociner, University of Illinois's first research professor of engineering, publicly demonstrated for the first time a motion picture with a soundtrack optically recorded directly onto the film."--Gil Press on the This Day in Data, AI, and Learning blog.[++] "In 1918 and following, Prof. J. T. Tykociner of the University of Illinois carried on experiments and developed a system. This work was described before the American Institute of Electrical Engineers and in the SMPE Transactions." After pointing out that three new tools had in comparatively recent times become available for the solution of the sound-picture problem, (namely, high-frequency currents, photoelectricity, and thermionic amplifiers), Prof. Tykociner gives a broad discussion of requirements and possible arrangements, As a source of modulated light he used for the most part a mercury arc with either modulated continuous current or modulated high-frequency current, and for reproduction a Kunz (cathode of potassium on silver) photo-cell. The light from the mercury arc is particularly potent photographically, but is sluggish in following the input modulation, which results in some loss of the higher audio frequencies."--Kellogg, Edward W., "History of Sound Motion Pictures, First Installment" Journal of the SMPTE, 1955, June, pp. 291-302. [++] Tykociner's invention worked, though its application as part of an industry standard for Hollywood (etc.) did not. After having funding problems with his university (which also demanded the rights to the invention) left Tykociner high-and-dry, and for one reason after another failed to find funding for his successful product. At least some of the rejections (as with General Electric) were made to protect the possible benefactor's own research in the field. Tykociner failed to find support, and went on to different areas of research. See: Harry M. Geduld, The Birth of the Talkies, From Edison to Jolson (online).
