With ownership inscription on half-title, dated 18 September 1927. Eight attractive full-page colour illustrations (two out of register) in text, in a range of styles, suggesting stock images by different illustrators, and two uncoloured illustrations on the inside wraps, coloured in (by a child?), with another two illustrations on the front and back covers. This item is something of a mystery. Herbertson (born in Norway of Scottish descent) was the author of a number of books (for both children and adults), but there is no record of this title on either OCLC WorldCat or COPAC.

Printed decorative border on front cover, with same border in black ink on title page, enclosing the title in block capitals in red ink: 'SPÉCIMEN | DE | CARACTÈRES, VIGNETTES | & FILETS | LINOTYPE'. Subtitle also in red ink in smaller font size in bottom right-hand corner: 'ENTIÈREMENT EXÉCUTÉ | SUR MACHINES | A COMPOSER LINOTYPE'. Title and page of 'CALIBRAGE' followed by twelve pages printed in black within red decorative borders; then six pages (plus page with section title) of 'Nos Séries de Caractères linotype pour Annoces et Titres'; then three pages (plus page with section title) of 'VIGNETTES | & FILETS | LINOTYPE'; then two pages of 'COMBINAISONS OBTENUS AVEC NOS FILETS ET VIGNETTES LINOTYPE'; and a last page explaining a 'Quadrillé fondu sur Linotype'. Specimens containing dates 1922, 1932 and 1932. Scarce: no record on COPAC or WorldCat, and none in catalogue of the Bibliothèque Nationale.

Original publisher s half morocco binding with author s name and title in gilt lettering on spine; lightly worn. This dramatization of an interlude in Goethe's Italian journey is the first book privately printed for the noted Berlin bibliophile Gotthard Laske (1882-1936), a wealthy outfitter, who acted as a generous patron to authors, and commissioned a number of publications. Unique edition, beautifully printed in the New Elzevir type on hand-made paper, limited to 100 copies only: the present copy, number 10, was printed for Lilli Wolff, a member of a Berlin music publishing family. The subject of the play, written in 1919 by the wellknown German writer Albrecht Schaeffer (1855-1950), is Goethe s visit to his friend Heinrich Meyer at Stäfa on the Lake of Zürich in 1797 as part of his celebrated Italian journey. The action is set at the Alte Krone Inn, the main characters being Goethe, Meyer, and a young lady also lodging at the inn.
