Novel of Southern life between 1859-1877, from before the Civil War through Reconstruction, one which combines the story of a matriarch determined to protect her family who nevertheless becomes involved in the tragedy of the newly freed people trapped by the black codes and the corruption in Washington. SIGNED on the front endpaper with the words "best wishes." 395 pp. Very near fine in a very good dustjacket.

Bert Underwood (1862-1943) was an American photographer and one half of the stereocard and photography company, Underwood & Underwood, which he co-founded with his brother, Elmer Underwood (1859-1947), in 1881. Underwood & Underwood specialized in distributing and producing photographic materials and was among the most prolific distributors and producers of its kind. By 1910. Underwood & Underwood began to focus more on news photography and captured some of the earliest aerial photos. In 1920, the company stopped producing stereocards and sold its stereographic materials and rights to the Keystone View Company. Underwood & Underwood enjoyed many more years as a photograph distributor until the 1940s.

Kroll's Garden was a well-known beer garden. It is named after a battle Napoleon won against the Austrian Army in 1797, the Battle of Rivoli.

A massive (almost 900 pages) self-published novel about a Black family and their struggle spanning the post-World War I migration to the North through the Depression and into the Civil Rights Era. Author's presentation label affixed to the front fly, Inscribed and Signed by the author "My dear friends Nancy and Jim Crooke.".
