Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. SIGNED. Rare and possibly unique Penguin first reprint. In 1939 Penguin were still using dust wrappers on some of their paperbacks, and this has one. But on the title page you will find why this copy is likely to be unique. It is beautifully signed 'John Fothergill' in ink, and that ink is now pleasantly faded into a kind of aged sepia. There are faults; at the rear of the book is a page of Penguin and Pelican titles, and a piece of the page has been torn out, a section measuring about 3 inches by 1 inch. The delicate jacket has some creases and chips, but at least it is now protected in a mylar sleeve. The jacket under the sleeve remains essentially complete, including the price, which in those days was 6d, which in today's money is less than three pence. A vastly entertaining read, this wonderful account of hostelry keeping reads with great charm and a waspish insight today. As one reviewer wrote, 'A narrative, humorous, sarcastic, independent, and often personal to the razor edge of offence, a book in perfect keeping with the character it exploits.' This is one of the deep blue Penguin 'Memoirs' issues. Because of the presence of the jacket, the book itself sports a wonderfully preserved classic design. But it is the signature that makes this so very collectable. Language: eng Language: eng 0.0 Language: eng 0.0 Language: eng 0.0 Language: eng. Signed by Author.

When Mr. Lippincott, the Philadelphia publisher, approached Mrs. Van Rensselaer about writing a special book on Newport, she sought the help of Dr. Sherman. These 9 handwritten letters in ink were written to Dr. Sherman dating from February 27, 1900 through December 23, 1900. The letters tell the story of how she came to write the book and thanks Dr. Sherman and Mr. Franklin for their many suggestions, ideas, and specific aid in writing Newport: Our Social Capital. She begins from her Philadelphia address in February by writing to Dr. Sherman for assistance, mentioning that "I have Mr. Mason s book on Rhode Island, but I want to know if there is a surviving congregation of the first Baptist Church and where it now is. Also if there is any sketch of it. So much has been written about Trinity, that I should like to bring the Baptists and their congregation more prominently before the public. I wish I could see you to ask a dozen questions about early days in Newport for you and your family must have many traditions. Can you give me the date when Bellevue Avenue was cut through to Rough Point? And when the Ocean Drive was laid out. I carried map and pictures to Mr. Lippincott, putting them in his hands; he promises to care for and to return them promptly. It gave me the greatest pleasure to send you a copy of my history of Newport. (A total of 9 letters, comprising 34 handwritten sheets of stationery, each sheet measuring 7"x 5.5", most with her No. 338 South Twelfth Street, Philadelphia address). A fascinating archive which showcases the creation and development of one the finest books about Newport, RI. First Edition with matching dates of 1905 on the title and copyright pages. This edition is printed from the type, and is limited to Three Hundred and Forty-Seven copies. This is Number 148.".

  • Seller image for The Frontier Trail Or From Cowboy to Colonel. An Authentic Narrative of Forty-Three Years in the Old West as Cattle-Man, Indian Fighter and Army Officer. By Colonel Homer W. Wheeler (Retired) U.S. Army (Late Fifth Cavalry) With an introduction by Major-General James G. Harbord, Assistajnt Chief of Staff, United Stated Army for sale by Brainerd Phillipson Rare Books

Hardcover. Bound in brick red cloth stamped brightly in black, the book is in very good minus condition. The front and rear boards are clean, the corners are bumped. With light wear and a touch of fraying to the top and bottom of the spine ends. The spine bulges a little because of the additional leaflets and letters glued in; and the hinges are tender and separating; the rear hinge is mostly sprung. This extra-illustrated copy is unique. First it is inscribed: "To W. Thornton Parker. M.D. With kind personal regards of the Author. Homer W. Wheeler Col. H.O. Cavalry. Retired. Los Angeles, Calif. May 13th 1924." The front paste-down bears the armorial bookplate of William Thornton Parker, M.D. The volume is then extra-illustrated with photographs, leaflets, and letters from Homer Wheeler to Thornton Parker. On the verso of the title page Dr. Parker has pasted a photograph of himself attired in buckskins, holding his rifle across his knees and cradling his dog's head with his right hand. Inscribed beneath the photo: "William Thornton Parker, M.D. Surgeon N.L. Indian Service-- White Earth Indian Reservation Minnesota 1879-80." On the next page is the photo of a Chippewa tomahawk and written in ink: "Presented to Dr. W. T. Parker by Chippewa War Chief Meeshee Kee Gee Shig." There are two sepia photos of "Fort Leavenworth Kansas, 1880" glued in between pages 196 and 197. Another striking sepia photograph is of "Fort Cummings New Mexico" tipped in after p. 124. There is an 8 page pamphlet titled: "Personal Experiences among our North American Indians from 1867 to 1885 by W. Thornton Parker, M.D. published in Northampton, MASS in 1913" tipped in opposite p. 309; and an article entitled: "The Evolution of the Colored Soldier by W. Thornton Parker, dated in ink 1899. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. UNIQUE FIRST PRINTING of the hardback first edition! Rare indeed as a first edition in a decent wrapper, this copy is SIGNED by several members of the original cast, including JOHN GIELGUD, Nan Munroe, Valerie Taylor, Angela Baddeley, Annie Esmond, and Pat Sylvester. The most important signature is John Gielgud's, and it has unfortunately faded over the years. But this is a great copy of a stunning play, and, probably because of the contemporary signatures, it has obviously been treasured. The jacket is not importantly damaged, just a few chips and tears, most of it merely the ravages of use and age. No live matter is affected, and the price - 5s - is still on the flap. The jacket is now protected. The signatures are on the various official stage photographs placed throughout the book, and there are eight first cast photographs in all. This is a copy that should be in a museum! The play stands up remarkably well, and it remains a high point in the author's brilliant career. As an encapsulation of the immediate pre second world war structure of English middle class life this stands head and shoulders above most contemporary dramas, and it would make a great production today. Some foxing, as you would expect in a book of this age, printed on ordinary paper. The photographs are all printed on art paper, so they remain excellent and unspotted. THIS IS A PRIME COLLECTABLE, for anyone interested in theatre history. Language: eng Language: eng 0.0 Language: eng 0.0 Language: eng 0.0 Language: eng.

1st edition. Single fold pamphlet, 12mo (postcard-size), text on 2 of [4] pages. Invitation to Gustav Gottheil's 70th birthday celebration written by Israel Davidson, when he was still just a young A.B. (Bachelor of the Arts). The invitation reads (in translation): A Poem of Gold In honor of the man, a pillar was erected, honoring our rabbis and educating the poor, He loves his people and defends his religion, his glory is over Israel, the Lord God Almighty. The Brilliant Dr. Gustav Gottheil, Nero Yair Wiehl, Chief preacher for the Emanu-El Congregation in New York, Send to him On the day you turned seventy years old May 28, 1897. From the one who seeks his peace and basks in his light, Israel Davidson, B.A." An addition poem in Hebrew is included inside. Gustav Gottheil (1827-1903) "was educated in Posen under Rabbi Solomon Plessner, and later continued his studies at the universities of Berlin and Halle (Ph.D.), receiving in the meanwhile his 'hattarat hora'ah' in the former city from Samuel Holdheim, whose assistant he became (1855). He also studied under Zunz and Steinschneider. In 1860 he set out from the Berliner Reform Gemeinde to labor for progressive Judaism in new fields. In 1860 he received a call from the Reform Jews of Manchester, England, and he went thither as rabbi to the Manchester Congregation of British Jews. Two of his most noteworthy sermons preached in Manchester were on the slavery question, attacking those who had declared the institution to be sanctioned by Mosaic law. He left Manchester in 1873, having been elected to succeed the Rev. J. K. Gutheim as assistant to Dr. Samuel Adler, the senior rabbi of Temple Emanu-El, New York. When Adler retired about eighteen months later, Gottheil succeeded him. On taking charge he reorganized the religious school, and assisted in founding a theological school where preliminary training might be imparted to future candidates for the rabbinate. He prepared in 1886 the first Jewish hymn-book printed in America (with music in a separate volume by A. Davis); it contains not only traditional Jewish hymns, but also others of Christian origin, and upon it was based the Union Hymnal, which has since been generally adopted by the Reform congregations in the United States. In 1889 he started the first Sisterhood of Personal Service, a philanthropic organization affiliated with Temple Emanu-El which has served as a model for similar institutions elsewhere. Dr. Gottheil was the founder of the Association of Eastern Rabbis, and when it was assimilated with the Central Conference of American Rabbis in 1890 he took an active part in the deliberations. He was one of the founders and the president of the (American) Jewish Publication Society, vice-president of the Federation of American Zionists, chairman of the Revision Committee for the Union Prayer-Book, and one of the governors of the Hebrew Union College, Cincinnati. In honor of his seventy-fifth birthday a 'Gustav Gottheil Lectureship in Semitic Languages' was founded at Columbia University" (Cyrus Adler & Frank H. Vizetelly in JE) Israel Davidson (1870-1939), who studied at yeshivas in Jonava, Volozhin, and Slobodka was became a "world-recognized authority in his field. He was the author of the 'Thesaurus of Medieval Hebrew Poetry,' completed in 1933 after nearly twenty years of work. The four-volume 2,000-page thesaurus is printed in Hebrew except for a few pages of preface. It won for him in 1936 a $1,000 prize from the Bislik Foundation. Dr. Davidson was the author of 'Parody in Jewish Literature,' published in English in 1907. He was the editor of 'Sepher Shaashuim,' a book of medieval lore, published in Hebrew in 1914; of 'Saadia's Polemic Against Hiwi at Balkhi,' published in Hebrew in 1915, and 'Book of the Wars of the Lord' by Salmon C. Yeruhim, published in Hebrew in 1934. [He] graduated from the College of the City of New York in 1895 [2 years before publication of this invitation]. He became a fellow in Semitics at Columbia University in 1900, where he took a Ph.D. degree in 1902. He was an instructor in medieval Hebrew literature at the Jewish Theological Seminary in 1905 and a full professor in 1916. Since 1928 he had occupied the William Prager Chair of Medieval Hebrew Literature there. In 1926 he lectured at the Hebrew University, Jerusalem. Dr. Davidson received the degree of Doctor of Hebrew Law from Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati and that of Doctor of Hebrew Letters from Dropsie College in Phila- delphia, both in 1937" (NYT, 1939). We could locate no copies anywhere using OCLC, Archive Grid, OCLC, or any other method. Possibly a unique surviving copy. Very Good+ Condition. (AMR-65-6).

Oxford, printed and published by A.R. Mowbray at his office in Saint Aldate's Street, 1869, in-4°, 29,5 x 25 cm, 33 unpaginated leaves, printed in Gothic type, all with a double red typographical fillet border. Bound in full bleached vellum , richly decorated with gilt and thick red fillets which surround a large losenge with gilt initials in the centre (LSU ?). The central losenge is surrounded by small losenges filled with stylized gilt lilies, all edges gilt, pastedown and flyleaves in cream coloured watery silk, smooth spine with decorated gilt lilies within a thick red fillet. This is a unique illuminated copy. 33 pages (out of 64) have been illuminated by a professional hand in the mediaeval style; 3 full page hand painted miniatures (of which the Cannon plate); 4 nearly full-page initials; 5 manuscript titles with initials; 21 pages with large full page ornamental borders. Some miniatures are heightened with gold (sometimes with oxidation). The high quality of the illumination might lead us to the supposition that this copy was in fact a design example which had to serve for a printed chromolithography edition, possibly in another size. We could not verify if A.R. Mowbry ever entertained such a project. If not it remains an interesting question who the artist was. Alfred Mowbray founded in 1858 in Oxford a bookshop specialised in religious books. A London branch was opened in 1873. In 2006 the business moved to Hatchards on Piccadilly.

Amstelodami (Amsterdam), 1681, in-12°, 18 x 10 cm, untrimmed copy. Title + (1)(bl) + (38) pp. Bound in old but not contemporary half leather, gilt title on back, marbled endpapers. Printed on laid-paper with watermark ( 'three spheres, diameter ca. 7 mm, touching each other and topped by a right-angled triangle with a height of ca. 10 mm). See Willems 20 ; Berghman 2002. The Berghman catalogue (note at n° 2002) estimates that only 4 or 5 copies are still in existence., We collated our copy against the BM copy. It looks as if our copy is from a previous imprint. It has been used as a proof copy and bears the manuscript ink marks of a professional corrector; e.g. pp A3 Bassecourt, Sermons de Pieté =/Piété ; Baxter.pecheurs =/pécheurs ; pp A4 Calvifii =/Calvisii. Page A9recto :*histoire de l'Eucharistie, 8. This last entry has been changed in (format) 4. (Correction as it appears in the BM copy). Most of the corrections have been taken over by the British Museum copy. According the previous owner, in the 19th century the catalogue belonged to a French collector named De Viry from the neighbourhood of Rodez. Willems (n°20) states in his description that this catalogue is extremely rare. As pointed out above our copy seems to be from an imprint which preceded Willems 20. We reckon this copy to be of the utmost rarety - perhaps unique !! We add to our copy the CD-Rom with the BM copy. We also add the very rare reprint made in 1823 by J. Motteley, printed by Firmin Didot, in 100 copies only. Incidently this reprint corresponds exactly with the BM imprint.
