Durchaus o…rdentliches bis gutes Exemplar, das nur neu aufgebunden werden müßte (sehr breitrandig, durch Beschnitt könnten die Randmängel restlos beseitigt werden!). Doppelte Seitenzählung, neben der in Klammern gesetzten originalen Paginierung (S. 21-128) in den Abhandlungen der Akademie auch eine neue für diesen Separatdruck. Bedeutender Philologe, Geschichtsphilosoph und Politiker (1805-1861). Die elterliche Familie stand in engem Kontakt zu Joseph und Guido Görres und Clemens Brentano. Er studierte in Bonn, u.a. bei August Wilhelm Schlegel und Barthold Georg Niebuhr. Seit 1837 war er Professor an der Universtät Würzburg und ab 1844 in München, dort auch Mitglied der o.g. Akademie. Seine königskritische Haltung während der Affäre um Lola Montez, irische Tänzerin und Geliebte König Ludwig I., führte 1847 zum Entzug seiner Lehrerlaubnis. Diese erhielt er aber 1849 zurück und im selben Jahr ein Mandat in der Kammer der Abgeordneten im Bayerischen Landtag, dem er bis zu seinem Lebensende angehörte. 1856/57 war er auch Rektor der Münchner Universität. Sein wissenschaftliches Werk geriet nach seinem Tod zunächst fast in Vergessenheit, bevor es Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts u.a. von Jacob Burkhardt wieder rezipiert wurde. Als Politiker vertrat er einen kämpferischen Katholizismus und gehörte in der Frankfurter Nationalversammlung der äußersten Rechten an. Sprache: de.
