Ausführlicher Brief mit Ort,Datum, Unterschrift signiert m. eigenhändig Nachsatz Breitenau, 10.1.1947 2 SS. 4° wohl an Frau von Hassell, die ein Buch ihres ermordeten Mannes ULRICH VON HASSELL (1881-1944) herausgegeben hatte. ich habe zwei Tage lang nichts getan, als das Buch von der ersten bis zur letzten Silbe genau durchzulesen. Die verehrte Gestalt Ulrich von Hassells ersteht aus ihm, herrlich wie ein Denkmal. Erwähnt auch die Geschwister Scholl.

Two interesting German educational works, together in a contemporary binding.The first is the third edition of fatherly instructions to his children by the German nobleman Johann Casimir Kolbe von Wartenberg (1584-1661), originally written in 1650 and first published posthumously in 1674. Johann Michael Rüdiger added the valuable preface for the 1696 Cologne edition, dedicated to the 8 year old prince, later King Friedrich Wilhelm I of Prussia. The present edition includes all original prefaces and a new one, and adds a genealogy of the House of Kolbe von Wartenberg by Georg Helwich. The second work is the first edition of a complete educational course for a young prince by the German historian Johann Christoph Wagenseil (1633-1705), published in the year of his death. Between descriptions of his reception at the Imperial Court at Vienna by Leopold I, to whom the book is dedicated, the author covers reading, writing, arithmetic, languages, religion, ethics, history, geography, technique and arts, as well as hunting, riding, fencing, building fortifications, fighting wars, etc. With old owner's inscription of J.C. Sommer on both title-pages. Binding slightly soiled; old ink annotations on first blank and some underscoring in text. Written on thick paper. * Originally written in 1650 and published in 1674 (with reprints 1703 and 1704, this book from Johann Casimir Kolb von Wartenberg is an early piece of pedagogy to his children. His oldest son Johann Casimir II Kolb von Wartenberg must have benifited from the education, as he rose in the ranks: In 1695 he became Freiherr (Baron), in 1699 Graf (Count) and in 1701 he became the first ever Minister-President (Prime Minister) of Prussia and head of the 'Cabinet of three Counts'.** French translation made by Jean Francois de Pompièrre de Jonquères [1709-1781]. Apparently no French translation has ever been published, so de Jonquieres has merely meant it as education for his own son Paulin Philippe Henri de Dompierre de Jonquières [1744-1822], who later became council for the Prince of Orange. The family later moved to Denmark.
