Paperback. Condition: Very Good. T. S. Eliot is not only one of the most important poets of the twentieth century; as literary critic and commentator on culture and society, his writing continues to be profoundly influential. Every student of English must engage with his writing to understand the course of modern literature. This book provides the perfect introduction to key aspects of Eliot's life and work, as well as to the wider contexts of modernism in which he wrote. John Xiros Cooper explains how Eliot was influenced by the intellectual climate of both twentieth-century Britain and America, and how he became a key cultural figure on both sides of the Atlantic. The continuing controversies surrounding his writing and his thought are also addressed. With a useful guide to further reading, this is the most informative and accessible introduction to T. S. Eliot. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

First Edition
8vo. 73, [3] pp. Black embossed cloth, embossed blind-stamped lettering on front cover (minor edgewear, rubbing, slightly shaken), still VG- copy from the library of Edwin Vincent O'Hara (1881-1956), Roman Catholic Priest, educator, social reformer, and author of the Pioneer Catholic History of Oregon., whose manuscript note indicates this copy was acquired after he became the bishop of Great Falls, MT in 1923. First edition of this scarce Oregon imprint, and one of the earliest publications issued by the Mount Angel Seminary Press. This work publishes in Latin the orders and decrees describing and outlining the work and efforts of the Catholic missionaries and churches in the Oregon Territory and later state. It includes orders, decrees, and letters concerning missions and churches in Walla Walla, Vancouver Island, Portland, Willamette Valley from and to the Archbishops and Bishops in Oregon, Idaho, Washington, and Vancouver Island. Of particular interest, the second Provincial Council was vehemently opposed to Public Schools, and that due to the "swearing, cursing and Profane expressions . . . of public school children" all good Catholics were "enjoined to preserve the little ones from the poisoned atmosphere of these godless institutions." The Third Provincial Council was overseen by Archbishop William Gross who was also responsible for urging the Benedictine Monks to establish the Mount Angel Seminary to train Pacific Northwest priests.

II. First edition, No. 265 of 550 sets (mirroring the publication of the Hudson's Bay Record Society Series, but only 500 were available for sale originally) of the letters by Dr. John McLoughlin, Chief Factor of Fort Vancouver during the period represented here. These letters provide invaluable glimpses of the inner workings of the Fur Trade, Pacific Northwest Indians, Customs, Social History, and the political struggles of the time. McLoughlin had been a partner with the North West Company fur traders until merged into the Hudson's Bay Co., and was appointed Chief Factor to the Columbia District, and originally placed at Fort George (Astoria), but in 1825 moved to Fort Vancouver and constructed by the Company. He directed the fur trapping expeditions throughout the region, regularly interacted with the local Native American tribes, and aided American missionaries when they first arrived, as well as exploiting advantages in what would become British Columbia and Alaska against the Russians.

This voyage became one of the most important ever made in the interest of geographical knowledge. Vancouver sailed by way of the Cape of Good Hope to Australia, where he discovered King George's Sound and Cape Hood, then to New Zealand, Hawaii, and the northwest coast of America. In three seasons' work, he surveyed the coast of California; visited San Francisco and San Diego, and other Spanish settlements in California; investigated the Strait of Juan de Fuca; discovered the Strait of Georgia; circumnavigated Vancouver Island; and disproved the existence of any passage between the Pacific and Hudson's Bay.
