Walter Baldwin Spencer arrived in Australia from England in 1887 to take up the post of Professor of Biology, University of Melbourne. In 1894 Spencer took part in the first major scientific expedition into Northern and Central Australia in the capacity of zoologist and photographer. Spencer participated in numerous other expeditions throughout his career. His interest in anthropology, and photography, has provided a significant contribution to our understanding of Aboriginal life in Australia. This selection of Spencer's work is a fascinating evocation of Aboriginal life as it existed before the arrival of Europeans.
