Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. Jacket by Eugene Dodd (illustrator). 1st Edition. First edition, first impression. Some very slight edge wear to top of jacket and spine, not price clipped (£18.95), no inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg++ copy, looks unread. 272pp, illustrated. The story of the affair between Louise Alten and Lord Hartington, heir to the Duke of Devonshire, and their later marriage, takes place at the heart of aristocratic and political life during one of the most exciting eras of English politics. It runs from the front benches of the House of Commons to the Prince and Princess of Wales' high living circle, yet has never been the subject of a full biography. Lord Hartington later Duke of Devonshire, was a political high flyer, heir to one of the great Whig families. A Liberal leader who turned down the opportunity to be Prime Minister three times, he served at the heart of government during a seminal political age, serving under Gladstone and battling with Disraeli. Louise Alten, the 'Double Duchess' of Manchester and Devonshire, was first well known as one of the legendary beauties of Victorian high society. She became the mistress of Lord Hartington as he disentangled himself from a tumultuous affair with the famous society courtesan 'Skittles', and their loyalty to each other remained constant for thirty years. The Duchess was widely reputed to be the most powerful person in England outside the government and one of the great society hostesses of the age.

Add to basketBooklet - Unbound Pages. Condition: Very Good. In 1656, Sir Henry Vane the Younger was summoned before the Lord Protector and his Council for publishing A Healing Question Propounded and Resolved, a tract that urged reconciliation among Parliament's fractured factions. Though couched in the language of unity and godly purpose, the book was seen by Cromwell's government as a veiled critique of the Protectorate and a rallying cry for republican resistance. Vane, a former leading figure in the Long Parliament and a committed advocate of constitutional liberty, refused to recant or acknowledge the Council's authority over his conscience. The proceedings, though not a formal trial, marked a turning point in the Commonwealth's intolerance of dissent even from its former architects, and foreshadowed Vane's eventual downfall under the restored monarchy. 5 pages, printed in double columns. Printed between 1809 and 1826, these historic documents are vivid extracts from Cobbett's State Trials; pages from the courtroom record that preserve the voices, arguments, and verdicts which helped shape the course of British justice and still echo through its constitutional legacy. Over two centuries old, each leaf is a tangible fragment of legal history, compelling, original, and rarely encountered outside institutional collections. These are not reprints or replicas, but authentic 19th-century printings that are rich in drama, and steeped in history. This particular trial report has been removed from a volume of Cobbett's State Trials and is now preserved in a modern card cover for practicality - an unassuming but serviceable presentation that favours function over finery. Size: 15 x 25 cms. Category: State Trials; State Trials::Octavo; Cosmo Books : 29 years on ABE, 47 years taking care of customers. A bookseller you can rely on.
