Paperback. Condition: New. Reprint. In their 1953 book, Documents in Mycenaean Greek, Michael Ventris (1922-56) and John Chadwick (1920-98) demonstrated that the previously mysterious script Linear B was, in fact, a syllabic form of written Greek, thereby revolutionizing ancient history and linguistics. In this second edition, originally published in 1973, Chadwick examines how the study of the subject has expanded since 1953 and includes some of the material discovered since the initial publication. This book continues to be a valuable part of Classical scholarship and will be of interest to Classicists of every discipline.

Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. THE DECIPHERMENT OF LINEAR B [in:] Journal of Hellenic Studies, Vol. 73, pp. 84-103; quarto; single issue in printed wraps. The greatest adventure in the history of linguistics. Michael Ventris' and John Chadwick's decipherment of Linear B, which they controversially identified as the oldest written form of the Greek language. Linear B is a semi-pictographic script that was known even to the ancient Greeks themselves - yet neither they nor anyone before Ventris could read a single word of the language. In the late 19th century Arthur Evans was the first to conduct a systematic study of inscriptions, which were found mainly at Mycenaean palatial sites in Pylos (Peloponnese) and Knossos (Crete). Various theories about Linear B followed, but it wasn't until the 1940s that Alice Kober was the first to grasp the grammatical structure of the language: she constructed grids, linking similar symbols in groups of threes, and identified the language as inflected, amongst other findings. This lay the groundwork for Ventris - a young architect and erstwhile classicist - to begin his detective work. His first moment of inspiration came when he realised that certain symbols groups only occurred on Cretan inscriptions. Might these be the names of Cretan places? This inspired guess allowed Ventris to decipher much of the language, and he announced his findings in July 1952 in a BBC radio programme. The classicist and Bletchley Park codebreaker John Chadwick heard Ventris' talk, leading the two to collaborate to solve a riddle almost as old as written language itself. When a tablet with a pictographic cauldron was discovered, with symbols tallying with Ventris' and Chadwick's 'ti-ri-po-de', it became clear that Linear B was in fact an ancient Mycenaean Greek script. Here we offer the first published account of Ventris' and Chadwick's work - the paper immortalised as 'the decipherment of Linear B'. Ventris tragically died young, in a motoring accident, in the same year (1956) as he and Chadwick completed their monumental 'Documents in Mycenaean Greek'. Controversy and doubt initially surrounded their work, but time and further research have proved the decipherment correct. (Linear A, meanwhile, remains undeciphered.) Very good condition: spine a little chipped near the top and frayed at the bottom; wraps overhanging the text block and therefore worn as always; fade to a portion of the front cover; internally very good, largely uncut, but the Ventris and Chadwick article is opened.

Cambridge, Cambridge University Press, 1956. 4to. In publisher's red full cloth with gilt lettering to spine. Front hinge almost detached. Internally fine and clean. XXX, (2), 452 pp. First edition of Ventris and Chadwick's exceedingly important work which constitutes the very first practical translation of Linear B (a syllabic script that was used for writing Mycenaean Greek - the earliest form of the Greek language) and certainly the earliest thorough discussion of Linear B translation. The decipherment of Linear B was not only of great interest to scholars and researchers, but also profoundly influenced European cultural history and affected how to define 'The Cradle of Europe': It demonstrated a Greek-speaking Minoan-Mycenaean culture on Crete, and presented Greek in writing some 600 years earlier than what was thought at the time.Linear B was initially deciphered by Ventris and Chadwick between 1951 and 1953. They published they first theories is 1952 in a short paper, a work which is still surrounded by much controversy" the present work is the first to contain what is generally accepted as the first thoroughly satisfying deciphering of Linear B. In a BBC radio program in 1952 Ventris concluded that the tablets (the ones translated in the present work) were Greek, and that there finally seemed to be a logical explanation to the mysterious signs: "One of the most interested listeners to the broad cast was a young Cambridge philologist specializing in Greek, John Chadwick. At the time, the Ventris theory was just the latest in a long line of supposed "solution", every one of which had failed. But Chadwick, who had himself failed to read the tablets on the assumption that they were Greek, was interested. On July 9, Chadwick wrote to [Ventris], congratulating him on the solution. They formed a close association and together wrote a report of the decipherment [Their 1952-paper]. It gave a decidedly confusing explanation of the decipherment. And it did not gather up all the loose ends." (Kahn, The Code Breakers, P. 933.)."At the time [in the early 50ies] the Linear B tablets from Knossos in the island of Crete were considered to be the earliest documents in the Greek language. Now the ancient Greeks have been claimed by Hellenists from the late 18th century onwards to be the founders of European civilization, all other peoples with an Indo-European linguistic heritage being excluded for some reason or another. In the description mankind's history, the absence or presence of the art of writing is even used for making the rather haphazard distinction between prehistory and history. So one can very well imagine why the island of Crete in offering hospitality to the first writing Greeks was proclaimed [.] the cradle of Europe." (Binsbergen, Black Athena Comes of Age, Pp. 102-3.).
