Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition in English. Translated from the Italian by W. J. Strachan. ***Very good in green cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to spine. Edges of boards slightly faded and rubbed. Slight spine slant. No inscriptions. Spine tight. Pages clean. ***In a very good dustwrapper which has not been price-clipped, showing original publisher's price of 15s net. Edges of dustwrapper very slightly rubbed and creased. Front and rear panels and spine of dustwrapper bright. No tears. ***157 pages. 190 mm x 128 mm. *** 'In "Demetrio" we see a clash of two personalities, the manager of a multiple store and a lift-boy in which the apparently stronger succumbs. It is a study of tragic frustration in a world where ordinary experiences, not untinged with humour, are heightened and even inanimate objects seem participants. ***The Bridge - 'll Ponte' - is the nickname of Ignazio whom we first see as a boy and then as a young man possessed by an idea which will bring benefits to his native town and its inhabitants. He is opposed by ignorant and apathetic authority and, like the heroes of Storm's "Schimmelreiter" and Ibsen's "Enemy of the People", suffers the fate of the "enlightened minority". ***"The Swing", the title story, has a most striking setting of landslide and tramontana. The story, which takes place at the end of the last war, is extracted and pieced together from the at times almost incoherent Alessio who is a victim of the shock of witnessing the tragic fate of his sweetheart, Lorenza, at the hands of the militia. ***These stories, which are impressive on many levels, reveal a highly sensitive and individual talent and appear here for the first time in translation.' (Quote from inside front jacket blurb). ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
