First edition. 8vo. Illustrated with black and white line drawings. Very good. Alberta Vickridge, the Bradford poet and editor, was educated at Bradford Grammar School for Girls. She had nine books of poetry published in her lifetime, the first when she was just fourteen years old. Vickridge became a regular contributor to the literary journal "The Wayfarer", and in 1916 became its editor under the pseudonym J.E. Beamsley. In 1917 she joined the Voluntary Aid Detachment (VADS) as a nurse in Torquqy. There she met and became lifelong friends with Agatha Christie who included poems by Vickridge in a magazine she was editing. After the War she published a collection of poems called "The Sea Gazer", which included some on the topic of war. In1924 she was awarded the bardic chair at the Southern Counties Eistedfodd for her poem "The Forsaken Princess", the only Yorkshire woman writer ever to be so crowned. She single-handedly mastered the craft of printing a range of limited editions. These included the quarterly journal "The Jongleur", launched in 1927, which gained a reputation nationally for the excellence of its poetry and printing quality. The final issue was published in 1956. Vickridge died in Bradford in 1963. A very scarce item.

Add to basketSoft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First Edition (first printing). Slim 8vo. 39pp. Plain card wrappers with an integral dust wrapper, lettered in black and red and with two small decorations. With a frontispiece, two full-page drawings and six decorations in the text. Some toning to the wrapper margins, and a light crease to the base of the upper wrapper. Edges, endpapers and several preliminary leaves and margins quite lightly spotted. A very good copy. A two-page foreword by the author precedes six poems and a song with an accompanying musical score. The author's eighth book, once again hand-printed and issued under her own imprint. Alberta Vickridge (1890-1963) was a Bradford-born author of nine volumes of poetry, six of which were printed and issued under her own Jongleur Press imprint (she also single-handedly issued a quarterly literary journal, 'The Jongleur', for nearly thirty years). She won a Bard's Crown and Bardic Chair at the 1924 Eisteddfod for her extended poem 'The Forsaken Princess', the only Yorkshire woman so awarded; and her work was admired by J. B. Priestley, Wilfred Gibson and Agatha Christie (she and Christie worked together as VADs in the Red Cross Town Hall Hospital in Torquay during the Great War). Today she is all but forgotten in her native Yorkshire. [A light item, UK postage will be reduced].
