Vidal défend vigoureusement le traitement chirurgical du varicocèle (alors très discuté) et expose sa méthode (enroulement sur deux fils d'argent passés, l'un en avant, l'autre en arrière des veines, et tordus chaque jour de manière à enrouler celles-ci sur les fils). Auguste Vidal, dit de Cassis (1803- 1856) étudia la médecine à Marseille, puis à Paris où il devint chirurgien de l'hôpital des vénériens et agrégé à la faculté. Il améliora de nombreux procédés opératoires. Ses publications furent souvent remarquées à la fois pour le fond et pour la forme, le style étant enthousiaste, plein de verve.
