First edition of this life of one of the greatest generals of the french history. Frontispice portret lacking, some waterstains in vol 2. Still very nice set !

4 volumes in-12 (17 x 10 cm), plein veau de l'époque, dos à nerfs ornés, minimes défauts à quelques coins et coiffes, petits travaux de vers sur 5 plats, un ex-libris manuscrit ancien au recto blanc du portrait (au demeurant illisible "Ce livre appartient à Mr Loyseau (?) à St Germain") dont l'encre a de façon légère traversé le feuillet et transparait sur le portrait gravé. Contemporary calf, minor defaults, a rather good copy. Seconde édition, considérée comme étant la meilleure. Bon exemplaire bien complet du portrait du Maréchal de Villars gravé par N. Thomas en 1784, et des plans dépliants des batailles de Friedlingen, Malplaquet, Denain et Fribourg. Lieutenant-Général dès 1693, le duc de Villars n'arrive au premier plan qu'avec la Guerre de succession d'Espagne. Il est victorieux à Friedlingen en 1702 : ses soldats le proclament Maréchal, ce que Louis XIV confirme. Il met fin en 1704-1705 à la guerre des Camisards dans les Cévennes par la négociation. En 1708, il s'oppose à Victor-Amédée II de Savoie dans les Alpes. Appelé dans le nord, il se retranche à Malplaquet et oppose une telle résistance au Duc de Marlborough et au Prince Eugène, que ceux-ci victorieux ne peuvent exploiter leur succès (1709). Nommé Duc en 1705, il est nommé Pair en 1710. Alors que la guerre paraît perdue, Louis XIV lui confie sa dernière armée : il réussit par un mouvement tournant effectué pendant la nuit précédant la bataille à battre largement le prince Eugène à Denain, près de Valenciennes (24 juillet 1712). Les tomes 3 et 4 contiennent son Journal, de 1724 à 1734.

Le Maréchal de Castries et le Marquis de Vogué firent appel à Anquetil pour restituer des mémoires authentiques et fiables et rendre justice à l'un des plus grand généraux de Louis XIV ; ils lui prêtèrent à cette fin 142 cahiers de mémoires de 32p. in-folio, et 14 volumes de lettres. Anquetil s'attela donc à un vaste travail de compilation et fit parler le Duc à la première personne, en s'aidant des lettres. Good copy, quite decorative. An edition of Villars' Memoirs by Abbé de Montgon was published in 1739, but it is very incomplete, based only on a copy of a single manuscript and on gazette extracts. Marshal de Castries and Marquis de Vogué called upon Anquetil to restore authentic and reliable memoirs and render justice to one of Louis XIV's greatest generals; they lent him for this purpose 142 notebooks of memoirs of 32p. folio, and 14 volumes of letters. Anquetil therefore undertook a vast work of compilation and made the Duke speak in the first person, using the letters as aid. All the documents were subsequently deposited in the Sainte Geneviève library.
