Condition: Nuevo. El Beato Carlos Foucauld (1858-1916) es el "hermano universal". Francés de naciemiento, cuando se encontró con Cristo descubrió que su vida no le pertenecía. Dedicó su existencia a seguir lo más cerca posible al Cristo pobre, en pobreza de solemnidad. Peregrina a Tierra Santa, con especial estancia en Belén y Nazaret, para captar la pobreza y la bondad de Jesús, que quiere hacer suyas. Tras una experiencia monástica como trapense, recibe la ordenación sacerdotal. El sacerdote Carlos de Foucauld no será el predicador: quiere "vivir en la soledad, la pobreza y el trabajo humilde de Jesús, tratando de hacer el bien no por la palabra sino por la oración, la ofrenda del Santo Sacrificio, la penitencia, la práctica de la caridad". Y todo esto, en medio de los tuareg que no conocen a Jesús, en pleno desierto del Sáhara. Su vida, hasta su muerte, tendrá como raíles conductores la presencia de Jesucristo en la Eucaristía, ante la que ora y adora, y en los pobres, a quienes sirve. Se anonadó, para estar más cerca de Cristo, pasó haciendo el bien y fue asesinado vilmente. Su espíritu pronto cruzó las barreras de naciones y creencias. Y fueron apareciendo instituciones, con diverso grado de compromiso, inspiradas en su espiritualidad radical. Uno de sus seguidores más conocidos, José Luis Vázquez Borau, ha logrado reflejar en estas páginas la grandeza de quien siempre quiso ser el último.
