This version is printed with text in German and Hebrew, with an introduction by S. Chneour. Lithuanian photographer Moshe Raviv-Vorobeichic studied at the Bauhaus in the 1920s and at the Ecole de Photo Cine in Paris. Following his studies, he returned home and created this scarce prewar document. Early montage and double exposure techniques exemplified in his work. Photographic study of Jewish Vilna prior to the Holocaust. Photographic reproductions, some photo-montages of Jews at play, many buildings, walkways, stairs, and portraits. Captions in German and Hebrew. Martin Parr: The Photobook Vol. 1, page 130. Text in German and Hebrew. Front cover with small bump at lower edge, near foredge. Text pages with some foxing. Binding in overall good, interior in good, photos in very good+ condition. [WITH] A collection of 14 original b/w photographs from the same Vilna Ghetto Project by Moï Ver, originally taken circa 1928. 12 of the photographs are smaller sized, measuring on average, approximately 4 1/2 x 3", with some variation in the cut dimensions. There are also 2 larger images, one measuring 5 1/4 x 7 1/2" showing the roof of the Great Synagogue of Vilna and the largest showing the gate of the synagogue's courtyard, measuring 8 1/4x 11 1/2". Surprisingly none of these evocative and striking images of the Vilna Ghetto and its inhabitants were used ultimately used in the book, but many are quite similar to the images which did get used. These photographs are likely later prints made from the original negatives, and all contain the ink stamp of the acclaimed phtographer's studio in Tel Aviv, on the verso. The versos of the two larger images also include notes in pen in German, with one dated to 1928.

"One of the most important (and rarest) photobooks in the history of the medium, Moï Ver`s Paris, first published in 1931 by Éditions Jeanne Walter, was avant-garde in its layered photos of the city`s streets and industry, not to mention its graphic layout. Yet tragedy soon struck: 95% of production was destroyed by a flood of the Seine with only around 40 books surviving, of which the publisher`s archival copy found its way into Karl Lagerfeld`s private collection. This exceptional copy was scanned for the painstaking 2004 facsimile re-print of Paris, published by Edition 7L and produced by Steidl in a limited print-run of 1,000 copies. Gerhard Steidl`s challenge was to recreate the gravure printing of the original book in offset technology, a process for which he registered a patent and experimented for over three years. To ensure the longevity of printing and binding quality, Steidl produced at the time a `pilot series` of books, identical to the long since sold-out run of 1,000 copies. This series of just over 400 copies - forgotten in our warehouse and recently rediscovered - are the last copies of a facsimile claimed by the New York Times to be so close to the original, that future generations would not be able to differentiate them." Lithuanian-born photographer Moshé Raviv-Vorobeichic trained at the Bauhaus in the 19…20s and after studying at the École de Photo Ciné in Paris, returned to visit his family and photographed life in the Jewish community of Vilnius, Lithuania¿s capital. The result was Ein Ghetto im Osten, Wilna. A poignancy has been added in hindsight since it was made at the beginning of a desperate time for European Jewry. With preface by poet Zalman Chnéour in both Yiddish and German. "In the same year that his Paris was published, Moï Ver - under his real name of Moshé Vorobeichic- produced Ein Ghetto im Osten (A Ghetto in the East). Even more so than Paris, Ein Ghetto im Osten was ostensibly a documentary book, but as he had done in his view of the French city, Moï Ver once again used a variety of New Vision strategies, the most obvious being to take many images from upstairs windows looking on to the narrow streets of Vilnius's old Jewish quarter. This creates odd angles and a dynamic mise en scène for his pictures of people going about their everyday business on the street. He also introduced cinematic cutting and montaging techniques to heighten the interest. 7 pages in German, 64 leaves of photos, 7 pages in Yiddish.

In 'Paris', seinem herausragenden Avantgarde-Buch aus dem Jahr 1931, verbindet Moi Ver ein dynamisches Montageprinzip mit einer ausgeklügelten graphischen Gestaltung. Die Bilder dieses Bandes zeigen auf eindringliche Weise den Alltag auf den kopfsteingepflasterten Straßen im Paris der zwanziger Jahre. Doch Moi Ver entwickelte durch kaleidoskopische Überlagerungen und hektische Repetition eine ganze eigene, genuine Form der Umsetzung. Etliche Fotobuchprojekte ließen sich in dieser Zeit nicht umsetzen, so daß er sein Geld als Fotoreporter verdiente. 1934 wanderte er nach Palästina aus, seit 1950 widmete er sich wieder der Malerei. Moï Ver (Moshé Raviv-Vorobeichic) was born in 1904 in Vilnius, Lithuania, where he also studied painting. In 1927, visited the Bauhaus in Dessau to take courses with Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky, and Joseph Albers, before he left for Paris to study at the Ecole de Photo Ciné. After several unrealised projects for photographic books, necessity led him to begin a career as a reporter. He immigrated to Palestine in 1934, and from 1950 he devoted himself to painting. Das dritte Werk des legendären Künstlers, der mit den 1931 erschienenen Werken "Ein Ghetto im Osten: Wilna" (Martin Parr, The Photobook, vol 1, Seite 130) und "Paris" (Martin Parr, The Photobook, vol 1, Seite 128/129) Fotogeschichte schrieb. Der litauisch-jüdische Künstler Moi Wer (1904-1995), in den 20ziger Jahren Student am Dessauer Bauhaus und Freund des ungarischen Konstruktivisten Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, kam 1929 nach Paris. In spannungsgeladenen und atemberaubend neuen Photographien erschuf er einen rhythmisiertes Kaleidoskop der modernen Metropole. 1931 erschien sein Bildband "Paris" mit überwältigendem Erfolg. Im gleichen Jahr entstand der Buchentwurf "Ci-Contre" ("Gegenüber") mit 110 Originalphotographien. Dieser konnte jedoch in der Folge von 1933 - Moi Wer ging ins palästinensische Exil - nicht mehr realisiert werden. Anläßlich des 100. Geburtstages des Künstlers wurde "Ci-Contre" erstmals der Öffentlichkeit vorgestellt. Parallel erschien mit mehr als 70 Jahren Verzögerung das Buch in der von Moi Ver konzipierten Fassung. Condition: Inside excellent: no creases, no tears, no bumping, no foxing, strong binding; neat handwritten note at the top of blank first page. Pages very fresh and like unread. Covers fantastic without rubbing and scratching like so often. Covers were protected by a dustjacket for a long long time. The corners of the covers also excellent and very sharp and not like so often heavily rubbed; only at two parts minimalst used (nearly invisible). Dustjacket with bigger missing parts, but is super rare to have it with. Overall brilliant condition of this extrem scarce book! Collector`s copy! Vorobeichic was a Lithuanian painter & photographer. Zustand: Innen in sensationell schönem, saubererem Zustand: keine Knicke, keine Risse, keine Stockflecken; lediglich am oberen Rand der ersten freien Seite ein winziger handschriftlicher Vermerk. Cover wunderschön erhalten (geschützt durch den Umschlag), nicht wie so oft berieben oder zerkratzt. Auch die Kanten der Cover ungewohnt scharf und nur an zwei Stellen minimalst, unmerklich berieben. Der hochempfindliche, extrem seltene transparente Schutzumschlag mit größeren Fehlstellen, aber vorhanden. Sehr frisches Exemplar; wirkt wie ungelesen. Alles in allem von brillianter Erhaltung!
