This book argues that the elective system is a more effective approach to engineering education than the required system, which has been the standard approach for many years. This system would only provide students an organized course of study, but also one with greater depth and comprehensiveness, countering the argument that it would result in a disorganized education. The author maintains that the elective system allows students to match their learning to their interests and strengths as it relates to their chosen field and within the broader context of real-world engineering. This system has been successfully implemented in the Mining School of Michigan, resulting in higher quality work from students, and is adaptable across various professional institutions. Overall, the elective system promotes deeper engagement and better educational outcomes, indicating it is the coming system of education. It focuses on how the system was originally divided into two series called Laurentian and Huronian by the Canadian Geological Survey, and how this simple division became increasingly complex over time. The book analyzes these divisions, using evidence from the field and from the work of geologists over more than half a century, to explore their validity. The author points out that the divisions were based on assumptions about rock sequences proposed by Sir William Logan in the mid-19th century, and that these assumptions have not always held up to more recent scrutiny. Through this analysis, this valuable book provides insights into the history, methods, and complexities of geological classification. The author contends that most rocks, including volcanic and igneous rocks, originate from sedimentary formations. Through microscopic and field evidence, the author challenges the prevalent theory that igneous rocks stem from Earth's core. The book presents evidence that volcanic activity began in the earliest ages of Earth and was an intermittent process. Additionally, it argues that rocks of different ages share the same origins and have contrasting appearances only due to alteration and other environmental factors. The author's evidence and reasoning provide a fresh perspective on the formation and evolution of rocks, challenging traditional understandings and opening new avenues for research. Condition: Sehr gut. Papierbedingt leicht gebräunt. - Does the universal availability of medical care under the National Health Service promote a healthier population presenting fewer complaints, or does it encourage more patients to seek advice for minor disorders? Is there widespread 'abuse' of medical services, as is sometimes alleged, compounding the apparent shortage of medical manpower? Do changes in the pattern and incidence of diseases, as we move from the era of infectious diseases with well-defined onsets to that of chronic and degenerative disorders with insidious beginnings, make earlier consultation desirable and attention to 'trivial' symptoms essential ? What use is actually made of the health service, by what sort of people, and for what reasons ? The investigation described in this book set out to throw light on these and related questions by means of a study carried out jointly by doctors and social scientists in two London boroughs, Bermondsey and Southwark, served by Guy's Hospital. A new type of computer-linked medical 'branching' questionnaire was devised to elicit information about complaints suffered and measures taken to manage them from a random sample of 2,500 adults, who were interviewed in a house-to-house survey. The findings indicate that only 5 per cent of the sample population felt themselves to be entirely free of complaints; 18-8 per cent suffered from ailments for which they had sought no advice or treatment; and, of the remainder who took action of some kind about their illness, 60 per cent had resorted to self-medication. Fifty per cent of the complaints mentioned by respondents had received no treatment of any kind. The decision to seek medical advice (from general practitioner, hospital, or local-authority clinic) rather than attempting self-medication or letting ill alone, seemed strongly influenced by the nature of the complaint - by the individual's perception of his illness.
