Hardcover. Condition: gut. This Compendium of Liturgics" has long been a tried and tested companion for both practical and theoretical theologians. In this the third edtion both the contents and the thematic breadth as well as the circle of authors have been expanded considerably. The result is a book that presents many new approaches to the subject. The editors have put particular emphasis on the creative leeway present in occasional services and the newer forms of church services, such as those now found in the new "Handbook of Protestant Services." The scope of this volume, however, is not limited to Protestantism but rather is ecumenical and international in nature. This handbook provides many references to modern literature on this theme including the relevant Internet addresses. A detailed index enables quick and targeted work.Anyone interested in the various forms of liturgy in the Christian churches will find here both basic and in-depth state-of-the-art information." Add to basketFirst edition, scarce. Matthewman's original fairy tale invokes elements of Sleeping Beauty, Rumpelstiltskin and the Snow Queen, and is concerned with youth, beauty, and death. It is brought to life throughout by Wainwright's distinctive woodcuts, which were inspired by the artwork of the Viennese Secessionists. Matthewman was also the owner of the private Swan Press, which published poems by J. R. R. Tolkien during Tolkien's tenure at Leeds University. In keeping with Matthewman's occupation, The Crystal Casket is set in an arts and crafts paradise, where "if any man discovered that which would help the craftsman or the husbandman, or if any man made a beautiful song, or picture, or the like, him would the King reward with gifts from his treasury" (p. [7]). We have traced copies in just seven institutions, six in the UK and one in Ireland. We can find no record of The Crystal Casket in commerce. Octavo (181 x 142 mm), pp. [28]. Woodcut frontispiece, 3 headpieces and 5 illustrations. Original grey wire-stitched wrappers, title and illustration to front cover in black. Spine repaired with stab stitching, spots of rust soiling, a little creasing to upper edge: a very good copy.
Albert Wainwright (1898-1943) was born in Castleford and studied at Leeds School of Art, where he was friends with fellow student, Henry Moore. He was a prolific artist and illustrator, primarily in a post-Beardsley and Viennese secessionist manner. He found early success with a one-man show in Leeds, at the age of 22, followed by a show at the Goupil Gallery in London. He traveled extensively to Germany and Austria, where these images were created. One verso is another gouache drawing: "Gentleman in traditional costume, Salzburg." Both images are ink and wash drawings, unframed, unsigned, (25cm x 18cm).
