Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. A. (Alfred) Wainwright (illustrator). 1st Edition. Alfred Wainwright (1907-1991) described himself as a "fellwanderer", and he probably wandered, walked, hiked and climbed around the fells of the picturesque English Lake District more than anyone else. He is best known for his charming and informative series of seven little books, "Pictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fells". Those guide books were illustrated with his own highly accomplished drawings and printed from his own hand lettering. Here, we have a substantial book of his drawings with detailed captions (as usual, printed from his own hand lettering) describing the changes that the major Lake District town of Kendal went through between 1800 and 1900. The book is near fine, with a faint stain on the bottom edge of the textblock and an inscription on the front endpaper (mentioning the "Auld Grey Town", a nickname that Kendal acquired because of its grey, weather-beaten limestone buildings). The dust jacket is a little unkempt - good plus. Price-clipped and generally grubby, with tears, nicks and chips to the worn edges, small loss either side of the top of spine, and a 3.5" tear down front gutter.
