Cloth, 4to, 29 cm, 250 pp. 1,754 entries. From the introduction: "The bibliography is classified under six broad headings - A Printmaking & picture printing in general; B Intaglio plate processes; C Relief block processes; D Planographic (lithographic) processes; E Photo-mechanical processes; F Periodicals consulted. Section E i…s subdivided according to photo-mechanical processes that correspond to sections A to D. In order to keep this work within reasonably handy proportions we have confined our annotations to selected works and have prefaced each section with some Introductory notes which highlight 'key' works in that field. For less familiar processes we have also given an outline of the principal techniques and their development.Collations are kept to a minimum and text illustrations are not generally mentioned. Plates, however, are always noted and, in the happy event that they represent actual examples of graphic processes described, we have recorded their details. Two indexes conclude the work. One lists authors and all others who contributed to any publication, whether translators, editors, or even correspondents The other is a subject index and includes contemporary names, patent titles, and popular terms for individual graphic processes, with cross-references from alternative terms. The structure of the index segregates the contemporary technical literature from subsequent historical studies. To assist those who are looking for examples of the many graphic processes the index provides, for each process, the sub-heading, 'specimens' (where they exist)." Slight agetoning to contents, otherwise Near Very Good. In a dustwrapper which is slightly faded around the spine.

Cloth, 8vo, 23 cm, 182 pp, 42 ills, facs. From the blurb: "The development of printing during the nineteenth century from a hand-craft to a technology totally altered the appearance of illustrated books, and brought them to something approaching a mass market. All the significant steps in this technical and social revolution wer…e taken in Victoria's time, which saw the invention of photography and electrotyping at its beginning, and the perfection of the cross-line screen near its end. The gradual introduction of the new processes into commercial use is here traced and explained, with numerous examples. The impact of photography on wood engraving, etching and lithography is at the heart of the technical revolution; and the many techniques of varying efficiency by which photography gradually worked its way into everyday printing make fascinating reading - both for the technically minded and the social historians. An assessment of the relative importance of various methods used during the Victoriain period is made, and the author avoids concentrating simply on the more spectacular books or those illustrated by outstanding artists. Indeed, the book trade's fast expansion was far more the result of improved printing techniques than of any flowering of individual talent in the artistic world. This book therefore gives an account of the development of illustration and a history of the sort of illustrated books that were available." With two booklabels of Edward J. Law on the front pastedown endpaper (one being for his Anastatic Collection). Very Good in a dustwrapper with a slightly faded spine-panel.

Edition of 550 copies. Cloth, printed cover-illustration, 8vo, 22 cm, xii, 127 pp, ills. From the preface: "The authors have often been asked while compiling this book what they mean by colour illustration. For our purpose it is largely defined as an illustration which has passed more than once through the press. We have thus in…cluded tinted work on the grounds that printers often started in this way who later progressed to full-scale colour work. We have included as many printers as we could find whose work appeared in books. Very occasionally a printer has been included of whose work no example has yet been found. Lithographic artists are not included . The book deals only with British printers; continental firms.have generally been excluded unless they had a London office." A valuable guide to some 222 firms whose colour-printed work has been identified in books. From a contemporary review: "Firms are recorded in alphabetical order, their history is sketched in briefly but adequately when known, and there are details of their earliest and latest known publications; other works are noted if they have some special significance. Short technical descriptions help to clarify the processes used, and many entries indicate further sources of information. Lastly, addresses of the printing establishments are recorded, with the operating dates for each of the premises. Thus we are offered more than a mere directory of printers. Something of a firm's likely relevance to a particular line of research may be gauged from the entries, for this collection of information is clearly the fruit of a long and detailed association with the original material, and this has led to full appreciations of individual publications in relation to the development of the numerous colour printing processes of the time. " Top edge slightly spotted, otherwise Near Fine in Near Fine dustwrapper.
