A contemporary review of this book: 'The photographer who wishes to make a picture that possesses an intrinsic worth must have the vital, elusive flame of innate artistic perception within him. It is not enough for him merely to possess a technical mastery of his instruments any more than a competent artist can become great who lacks the sixth sense of form that stamps a genius. The plates in this book show some of the most famous models in Europe. Not only do they each possess a face and figure which are expressive and photograph well, but they have the intelligence to co-operate with the photographer in producing the effect striven after. Only by this partnership between artist and model can a photographic masterpiece be produced. A painter can work with an indifferent model, because his eye comes! between the painting and the sitter. The lens of the camera has no interpretative power, and hence the photographer must of necessity impose greater control upon the model.'
