Interior with minor signs of wear.; "Dutch people may find the title of this book rather thought-provoking. They will instantly associate the first part of the title, 'Imitation and Inspiration', with the general preconception that Japanese economy and culture evolved during these last decades as a direct result of a successful imitation of Western models. However, from the subtitle it appears that the book is about Western, and in this case, Dutch imitation of and inspiration by Japanese art. This book is not only a token of respect for the cultural and historical links between Japan and Holland, but, at the same time, proof that it is only through continuous contact with each other's cultures that mutual preconceptions based on stereotypes can be avoided. In Europe and North America, Japanese influences on Western art have gradually begun to attract a great deal of popular interest. In general, this interest has mainly focused on Japonism, which made its appearance in various Western art forms after the Japanese ports had been opened to foreign trade in 1854. However the unique position that was occupied by the Dutch in Japan from 1609 onwards, at first as representatives of the Republic of the United Provinces and, after 1813, as representatives of The Kingdom of the Netherlands, justifies a more elaborate treatment of the subject. Many art experts and connoisseurs have indeed devoted their attention to this period. However, they often have concentrated on the influence exerted on Japanese art and culture by the Dutch trading post on Deshima. From the pages that follow it will appear that, conversely, Dutch and other Western arts and crafts were strongly influenced by the Japanese. As early as the beginning of the seventeenth century, contacts between the Republic and Japan led to a great interest in Japanese art and the imitation of that art in the Netherlands. As becomes apparent from the various contributions to this volume, this interest has continued to the present day." foreword by Stefan van Raay.

None. Condition: None. Oblong Octavo album ca. 17,3x23,1 cm (6 ¾ x 9 in). 22 card stock leaves (5 blank). With 51 mounted original gelatin silver photographs from ca. 12,2x16,8 cm (4 ¾ x 6 ½ in) to 4,6x6,7 cm (1 ¾ x 2 ½ in). No captions. Most tissue papers preserved. Period dark brown full-cloth album fastened with a string. Edges worn, a paper label with a brief description of the contents mounted to the spine with adhesive tape, two photos partially detached from the mounts, several tissue papers with tears, but otherwise a very good album, with strong, interesting photos. Historically important collection of excellent original gelatin silver photographs, likely documenting the construction and the inauguration of the Solo-Kota railway station in Surakarta, Java, in the early-1920s. According to the photos, the collection was compiled by O. Wardenaar, a Senior Civil Engineer for the Nederlandsch-Indische Spoorweg Maatschappij (NIS), which officially launched the Solo-Kota (Sangkrah) station in 1922. As the NIS held the primary concession for the Solo-Wonogiri line, Wardenaar likely directed the complex hydraulic and structural engineering required to navigate the challenging terrain of the Surakarta Regency. The album contains 51 excellent original photographs, including two rare views of the newly opened Solo-Kota train station. About seven lively vernacular images document the grand inauguration of the new line. The images portray Dutch and Indonesian officials in formal white uniforms and European attire, posing before a ceremonial pavilion and proceeding toward a steam locomotive positioned nearby. The collection also features a compelling photograph of an open alun-alun (town square), with hundreds of spectators observing an official military procession. About eight well-preserved photos document the rigorous engineering behind the line's infrastructure. The photos capture the construction of a massive steel truss railway bridge and the sinking of riveted steel caissons into the riverbed. Clearly visible are local Javanese laborers overseen by Dutch engineers in white suits and pith helmets. Importantly, the series also includes about three photos of the completed spillway and downstream masonry face of a large irrigation dam, possibly the Delingan or Jombor reservoir near Surakarta. Especially interesting are about ten photographs, illustrating a railway bridge collapse and subsequent train derailment. The images show multiple freight boxcars (one clearly marked with the letters "SS" - Staatsspoorwegen) tilted at extreme angles or completely overturned, with large debarked timber logs spilled across the embankment. Several photos document severed steel truss bridge that appears to have plummeted into a rocky riverbed following the failure of a central masonry pier. European officials in white suits are seen surveying the twisted iron undercarriages, while surviving passengers are clustered nearby. The other photos from the collection document the buildings of the NIS and Nederlandsch-Indische Gasmaatschappij (NIGM), as well as a ceremonial performance of Kuda Lumping, showing performers riding wooden horses and men playing traditional instruments. Overall, historically important collection of excellent original gelatin silver photographs, likely documenting the construction and the inauguration of the Solo-Kota railway station in Surakarta, Java, in the early-1920s.
