Large 48 x 30 inches approx. and imposing watercolour on stretched cartridge paper, two sheets joined, preserved on original wooden stretcher, in original oak frame A fully finished painting showing Waterloo Crescent on what appears to be a sunny Saturday in summer. Viewed from street level at the West end of the crescent, the scene extends in the distance to the far end of Marine Parade, and is filled with detail. There are people on the street and promenade, individuals, couples, families with children, armed with buckets and spades, strolling, walking the dog, standing and enjoying the sights on the beach, where boats are drawn up. The whole is, of course, overlooked by the white cliffs and castle. The fine Georgian crescent, overlooking the sweep of the harbour, was one of the most prestigious addresses in Dover. Unusually, it is depicted in a manner that is not typical of the views and photographs that we have seen. Here, it has an imposing and decorative arcade, extending the full width of the pavement and supporting a wide balcony for the full length of the building, with an atrium in the centre, and large plate glass windows at ground level, in the manner of a large retail store or grand hotel. It is a matter of speculation as to whether this was a designer's projection of an intended development, or whether the crescent did indeed look like this at some time. Perhaps one of our customers can tell us. Whatever the case, this is an impressive view, showing considerable architectural detail and capturing the feel of Dover during a time when it was a popular holiday resort. Painting photographed through glass frame so some reflections. Very heavy item please request shipping costs if required. unavoidable.PRINTS/MAPS DOVER PRINTS/MAPS.
