The boards show general rubbing, and the corners are bumped, occasionally exposing slight traces of the underlying board. However, the gilt titling on the spine retains a fair degree of its original brightness and legibility despite the darkening. Internally, the binding holds firm without severe cracking, and the plain endpapers and title page are remarkably clean with only a hint of natural age-toning and no significant foxing, presenting a very readable and handsome copy. Catalogue Note: Unillustrated 1855 first edition of Edwin Waugh's foundational regional work. The provenance features a standard ownership bookplate for a "William E. Hodgkinson" affixed to the front pastedown, alongside a small, neat ink stamp from the renowned academic bookseller "B.H. Blackwell Ltd., Oxford". There is an additional, partially legible penciled ownership signature to the front free endpaper. Original mid-19th-century cloth editions of Waugh's early prose can be difficult to source on the open market, particularly those that have retained their original publisher's blind-stamped boards without undergoing modern rebinding or restoration. A cornerstone of 19th-century regional literature, Edwin Waughâs Sketches of Lancashire Life and Localities offers a rich, vernacular glimpse into the lives of Northern England's working classes. Often celebrated as the "Lancashire Burns," Waugh masterfully captures the local dialect, folklore, and rural character of the region just before heavy industrialization transformed the landscape entirely. The unclipped dust jacket is preserved in an admirable state, displaying vibrant, unfaded colours to the front panel and spine; however, it does exhibit some light edge-wear. Notably, there are visible tape ghosts and mild adhesive offsetting to the interior flaps and the corresponding paste-downs, suggesting a previous owner's diligent but dated attempt at preservation using a clear protective sleeve. Overall, it presents as a highly attractive, sturdy copy. Catalogue Note: This is a true first edition, first impression of the third and final instalment in Evelyn Waugh's masterful Sword of Honour trilogy, bringing the saga of Guy Crouchback to its conclusion. The volume is presented in its primary binding of blue cloth, complete with the iconic, original dust jacket which remains unclipped, retaining the '18s net' printed price on the front flap. Finding copies with a bright, unfaded spine and a firmly intact dust jacket is becoming increasingly uncommon. The presence of tape offsetting to the flaps and paste-downs is a relatively common artefact of mid-century private library preservation, adding a touch of factual provenance to the book's long-term care without heavily detracting from its shelf appeal. Following the events ofÂMen at Arms and Officers and Gentlemen, Unconditional Surrender completes Evelyn Waugh's semi-autobiographical Sword of Honour trilogy, widely considered one of the most profound literary responses to the Second World War.
