Softcover. Condition: vg- to vg. First edition. Folio. 12 unnumbered plates. Blue-green textured string-tied paper wrapper, with illustration and title in brown on the front cover. Signed, inscribed and dated by the artist in pen on at the top of the interior front wrapper by the artist. This work is a very scarce collection of 12 celebrity caricatures, by noted British cartoonist Mark Wayner (1888-1980). Figures depicted are American Harmonica player Larry Adler, violinist and composer Fritz Kreisler, English journalist Hannen Swaffer, English humorist and novelist A. P. Herbert, New Zealand cartoonist David Low, British-American artist Sir Jacob Epstein, First President of Israel Chaim Weizmann, British politician George Lansbury, American President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and British artist Sir William Rothenstein. All of these large images, captioned below and are finely printed in brown lithographs. There is no publication dated printed, but the work is known to have been published circa 1940. Quite scarce with only a few institutional holdings worldwide (only 1 on OCLC). Wrappers with minor age toning, rubbing and creasing to extremities. Sporadic minor foxing to the plates, mostly in the margins, with most images quite clean overall. Wrappers in very good, interior in very good- condition overall. Wrappers protected in modern mylar. This work is one of two known collections of the artist's work to be printed. The preeeding collection, titled "Celebrities in Caricature" was published in 1931. Alternate title: Celebrities Today in Caricature.

This was a benefit "In Aid of the Fund for the relief of the Jewish victims of the war in Russia." Artwork on the purple cover is signed, in the print, "Mark Wayner 1917" The matinee was organized by Mr. and Mrs. M. J. Landa. The patrons included Leopold de Rothschild, the Chief Rabbi [Joseph Herman Hertz], Elkan N. Adler, H. S. Q. Henriques, the Haham [Moses Gaster (1856 -1939), Haham of the Spanish and Portuguese Jews of Britain], Sir Joseph Lyons, Lucien Wolf, Israel Zangwill, John Galsworthy and others. Artwork on the purple cover is signed, in the print, "Mark Wayner 1917" Mark Wayner (Weiner)(1888 or 1889 - 1980) was a Polish-born artist who moved to London with his parents at the age of three. Displaying an early flair for drawing, he was first apprenticed to a German artist. He then studied at the Craft School affiliated to the Royal College of Arts and after that he studied at the Slade School of Art. Apart from painting, Wayner established a considerable reputation as a caricaturist and published two books on the subject. He supplemented his artistic income by designing posters and Christmas cards for the firm of Raphael Tuck. A lovely original pencil / coloured sketch of Winston Churchill. This is similar, but not identical to a lithograph of a sketch that he used in his work "Celebrities in Caricature." in 1940. Signed in crayon / coloured pencil to the lower right corner. An excellent quality caricature with his distinctive cigar and bow tie. There is light foxing to the sheet, and a little creasing to one edge (not affecting illustration). Image size is 18.5cm x 16cm. Sheet size is 27cm x 23.5cm. Mark Wayner (originally Weiner - 1889-1980) was a Russian born artist, whose family emigrated to the United Kingdom. He published two books of celebrity caricatures, as well as being a portraitist. .

A nice copy of this rare collection of caricatures by the Polish born British caricaturist Wayner. Included are two original sketches by Wayner. Winston Churchill, inserted to the front of the collection, and Roosevelt, which is tipped into the collection - over the top of the printed version of Roosevelt. Blue soft covers with a red title and vignette to the front cover. Tied with cord to left edge.
