Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Evanston, IL: Clark Publishing Company, 1948. The Fall, 1948 issue of Fate Magazine (Volume 1, Number 3) in Raymond A. Palmer's now-legendary paranormal-reporting non-fiction enterprise, which began with, in its first issue, Kenneth Arnold's cover account of flying crescents which "…skipped like saucers across a pond", an event which, for whatever reason, kicked off the modern era of UFO events. After that, Fate introduced countless events which remain, to this day, fodder for paranormal documentaries and investigation. This Fall 1948 issue - the third issue ever - bears one of the handful of truly iconic Fate covers, that being "The Red River Witch" (see scan). 12mo, illustrated staple-bound wraps, 128 pp. A Near Fine copy - and this one is as near fine as near fine gets, with just touch micro-edgewear and an almost indiscernible degree of color fade as you look toward the spine. See scans. Standard toning to the interior newsprint-grade pages, but these are supple, clean and and unchipped. Highest Grade, particularly for a periodical which often shows substantial wear from use. This issue features articles on the memorable Red River Witch, Charles Fort, a Kenneth Arnold reprise on phantom lights in Nevada, The Valley of Never-Come-Back, America's White Sunworshippers (A Thor Heyerdahl piece), The Flying Jigsaw Puzzle, America's Most Famous Ghost Story, The Temple Girls of India, The Black Art, Two Girls, One Body, The Devil, ESP events and of course much, much else, including the standard Departments, always engrossing in themselves. Interior art and photography is largely uncredited. A piece of paranormal history, and an example of a unique branch of Americana, in very highly collectible condition. Please see scans. l50n.

3pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In fair condition, on lightly aged and creased paper. He apologises for the 'very short letter' and 'long delay in answering'. He reports that 'the rings came in your order but I have not had a chance to use them and will not have now until next Spring or Summer'. He is sending money as requested. 'My three… plates of the trees came very nicely - one has just gone to the "Studio" so you may see it there later on.' He will write again when he has time for 'a rational note'.

Webster born in the USA moved to Paris in 1904, where he studied at the Académie Jullian. In 1914, he participated in the Second World War. From 1924, and until 1938, he will travel in Europe and at the same time take an interest in old mills (water and wind) and establish a census of these with supporting sketches. He was helped in this work by Germaine Huard, orphan, of whom he was the tutor and who would become his companion and collaborator (he married her in 1950). During the Second World War, Herman and Mounette were in Charentes-Maritime (Barrail castle). It is this period from December 1941 to March 1944 that is related through 22 watercolors of different formats (19.5 to 25 x 13.5 to 22). H.A.

A synopsis of adventive species of Staphylinidae (Coleoptera) in Canada is provided. Of the over 1654 rove beetle species recorded from Canada, 156 species in 76 genera and 13 subfamilies are reported as adventive, constituting about 9.4% of the fauna. The majority of adventive species belong to two subfamilies, Staphylininae (5…1 species) and Aleocharinae (49), and the genera with the most species are Philonthus (16), Atheta (8), Aleochara (7) and Quedius (7). All 156 adventive species are reviewed, including diagnostic features (supported by 156 colour habitus photos and 230 black and white images of diagnostic characters), native range, detailed distribution in Canada (with 151 distribution maps), general distribution in the USA, early Canadian and North American records and habitat information. New jurisdictional records are Atheta longicornis (Gravenhorst) from Alberta, Philonthus sanguinolentus (Gravenhorst) from eastern Canada (Ontario) and Xantholinus longiventris Heer from Canada (British Columbia). 360 pp., 386 figs, 151 distribution maps, hardcover gr. 8 [17 x 24 cm].

No Binding. Condition: Very Good. Approximately eighty typed and hand written letters relating to the estate settlement of the Canadian born artist Donald Shaw MacLaughlan (1876-1938) dating from 1938 to 1940. Also includes nine typed and hand written personal letters from the artist addressed to his friend the artist Herman A.…Webster (1878-1970). All those letters are signed MacLaughlan. The estate letters includes the initial obituary from the New York Herald attached to the original draft letter announcement which Herman A. Webster wrote. There is a letter from the British Consulate in Marrakesh to Herman A. Webster detailing MacLaughlans illness, passing and burial at the European Cemetery in Marrakesh, Morocco. The archive includes a number of letters from Raymond Harper of the at the time well known law firm Harper, Szlapka & Harper. His letters are initially addressed in the formal, but Ray Harper must have struck up a friendship with Herman A. Webster because later letters are addressed 'Dear Webbie'. It also includes the original sketch proposal of MacLaughlan's tombstone with the original artist pallet design, presumably by Herman A. Webster. Much of the archive deals with the settlements between family members, galleries, appraisals and transportation of MacLaughlan's personal effects including engravings and art work back to the US and Canada. Herman A. Webster traveled to Paris in 1904 where he enrolled at the Académie Julian and joined the studio of Jean-Paul Laurens (18381921), the Paris academician and professor at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts. It was there that Webster met Donald Shaw MacLaughlan (1876 1938), a Canadian artist already established as a significant presence in the Paris art scene. MacLaughlan was a practiced printmaker of considerable skill, as well as a teacher, and it was he who first taught Webster the craft of etching. [Wikipedia]. A truly unique historical archive in very good condition that is probably best inspected in person. Please inquire for more details.

[.]''. (in Bailly-Herzberg). (in Delteil). Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. H.H. Holmes was a doctor, real estate speculator, pharmacist, bigamist, swindler, and America's first media superstar serial killer. As he awaited trial, he put out a series of autobiographical documents, press releases, and interviews that revealed his sociopathic tendencies--and lied about… his crimes. The infamous killer of the Chicago World's Fair published a memoir and a confession, both of which conceal more than they reveal of the truth. Then he gave a speech at his hanging that recanted everything. This series of documents is edited into a seamless narrative with newspaper clippings that shows the dark but charming side of a man who had nine confirmed kills and who claimed to have killed 27. This edition ends with a description by Matt Lake, author of Weird Pennsylvania, of the strange secret burial of the hanged Holmes, and recent exhumation that calls into question everything we thought we knew about Holmes's last days. This item is printed on demand. Shipping may be from our UK warehouse or from our Australian or US warehouses, depending on stock availability.
