LETTER: 1p, 4to. On aged and spotted paper. Folded once. Written in the shaky hand of a ninety-seven year-old. She thanks him for his 'letter so well written', adding: 'I don't think I wrote as well as that when I was eleven years old!' She wishes him every success with his autograph collection, and is pleased to add her signature to it. 'I will put it to the end of this sheet so that you can cut it out and paste it in where you wish.' The signature is at bottom right: 'Yours with sincere good wishes | Berta Ruck | 12th March | 1975'. CARD: On the reverse of a card with printed advertisement for 'A Flamingo in the Drawing Room | Tales of Sicily | by Arthur Oliver | Scorpio Press, 56 Godstone Road, Purley, Surrey'. Aged and spotted. Folded once. On the back Ruck has written, evidently at the same time as the letter: 'from BERTA RUCK | BRYN TEGWEL | ABERDOVEY | GWYNEDD | WALES | Dear STEPHEN - | Now it is my turn to ask you something! Please get someone to ask for my son's book at the nearest Library! | Advertisement enclosed | Sincerely | Berta Ruck'.

On one side of a piece of wove paper, cut into a rectangle approximately 4.5 x 9 cm. Good, on lightly-creased paper with one vertical fold. Cut from an envelope, with traces of the postmark over the autograph, and a section of the gummed strip on the reverse. Reads 'From | John Cowper Powys | Waterloo | Blaenau - F Festiniog | Merionethshire | North Wales | I enjoyed thinking of you in Italy'.

One page, 8vo, fold mark, small closed tears on fold, good condition, pencilled ticks (by Stokes?). "I am in bed, now reading a bit of Ben Johnson [sic] now a bit of 'Moll Flanders", now a bit of [?] & now a bit of Marie Corelli." He anticipates when he'll next be in the "office". New paragrph, "Will you and Mr Moore go through that basket of mine marked "Current" & send off for setting that wghich appeals to you. There is an article on Arthur Machen, which should be cut [.]. Othersinclude: literary life, Books that have Helped, Massingham, [Charles S.?], & an article by Philip Page [.] In short send up anything you damn well like." Note: Evans edited T.P.'s Weekly from 1923-1929, and Stokes was Assistant Editor. The latter apparently coined the phrase "the best-hated man in Wales" for Caradoc Evans.

Text: "I was delighted [underlined] at long last to receive a reply to my letter: on one occasion [phrase underlined], I carefull replied to a certain letter - whic I had filed - seven years [phrase underlined] after I had originally received it: So a few months is nothing, my dear fellow! | I suggested to Gilbert Phelps that you might be the lad for 'Arts Chronicle' thismonth, but alas, your voice isn't quite OK: the microphone business is a bit tricky. [.] "And you hear my review of the Royal West Academy on 19 Nov. I mentioned your still-life: really it wasn't much of a show, was it! About the Welsh Show - [?] is still looking for a suitable gallery: I am now working [underlined] on the National Museum, through John Steegman & will of course let you know as soon as anything develops. The show at the St. George's Gallery was unknown iof to me, until I heard that Faed was showing there' | I have been asked to send some work to another [underlined] London Exhibition of Welsh Painting, due to open in early January at Heals' Galleries [underlined], Tottenham Court [leaf 2] Do you know anything about this show? The man organising it with Heals' is a fellow (a very bad painter) called Alan Tennant Moon, & if you would care to write to him c/o Heals, he would I am sure let you have particulars if you are interested - sending in dates - Dec. 29-3 Jan. | I will be in Bristol 27028 with my wife for my broadcast on Sunday 28th & would come to see you & like you to meet my wife also: could you perhaps put us up for a night? We are booked in the Grand Hotel for the Sat. to Sun: anyway let me know [?]: I have met a millionaire collector of pictures near here - a fellow called H.G.P. [H.J.P. Bomford] - a marvellous collector of French Impressionists - Manet, Cezanne, Renoire, - Degas - & heaven knows what else besides - Gainsborough - Reynolds - Constable - Turner[.] I have given in your name & will try & get him over to see your work as soon as I can.".

Text: "Faed [fellow-artist] wrote me a letter some little while ago, which I only received on Saturday on my return from Berlin, & the conclusion of a German lecture tour, I am simply delighted to hear of your existence & whereabouts & hope we can soon meet. Please write, and if you could come up to this part of the world, even this coming week-end, I might see you more quickly then i[?] we would until I can get to Bristol. I am going to Gibraltar next month, so let's try & fix something up as soon as possible. I would like also to talk with you about the prospective exhibition of Welsh Art which [?] has I believe, already mentioned." WITH: Two Autograph Letters Signed "Brom" {Bromfield Rees] to Mervyn Levy , assumed from multiple presence in Rees's archive, to be his file copies, total 3.5pp., 12mo, dated 24 April 1947 (i.e. reply to the above letter by Levy) and 2 May 1947, both in a small neat hand, light-hearted tone, talking about Levy's travels and prospective meetings.
