First edition, first impression, with a photograph of the author to the front pastedown. Pictured is the author shortly before his death, and this copy of the early exploration of Persia's oil potential is, in the words of the introduction, a fitting "tribute to his memory." J. E. A. Whealler began working for the Anglo-Persia O…il Company (APOC) in 1922 and compiled this survey of existing information concerning the geology of Persia. Founded in 1908, the APOC (the forerunner to today's BP) emerged as an important supplier of oil to the British Royal Navy during the First World War, and this copy is best viewed in the context of the company's ongoing search for oil sources in the Middle East in the 1920s. Whealler passed away prematurely of appendicitis complications shortly after finishing the project, and the volume's preface - authored by the noted mining engineer Sir John Cadman - suggests that Whealler "would rapidly have reached the first rank of Petroleum Geologists." Octavo. With folding map and diagram. Original green cloth, title to front cover in gilt. Extremities rubbed, tips bumped with slight wear, pages clean and bright, crack to gutter before final signature. A very good copy.
