First edition. [4], 140pp. Contemporary gilt-tooled navy calf, contrasting brown calf lettering-piece, marbled edges. Lightly rubbed. Marbled endpapers, adhesive residue to front blank fly-leaf. With a loosely inserted photographic portrait of the author, with manuscript biographical notes to verso. Presentation copy, ink inscription to verso of FFEP: 'To Miss Masey / with the Author's Love'. The first edition of the collected verse of Ilminster-based Unitarian minister Edward Whitfield (1792-1886), including the long poem 'The Bereaved', a meditation on parental grief; and 'Kenilworth', a picturesque rumination on the history of the castle which had inspired Walter Scott's Waverley novel of the same name a few years prior. Size: 8vo.
