Cloth, 8vo, 22 cm, 144 pp, 23 ills. From the blurb - "Robert Bloomfield was born in Suffolk of a humble background. He attended the local dame school and as a young man travelled to London to learn the trade of shoemaking. Years later he wrote The Farmer's Boy, a poem based on nostalgic memories of his youth. But he had no success with publishers until a barrister, Capel Lofft, from close to his birthplace in Suffolk, extended his patronage. Other backers included the Duke of Grafton, the Duke of York and even the Prince of Wales himself. The first edition was published in 1800 with great success. By the seventh edition in 1803 more than 30,000 copies had been sold. Other poems followed and many are worthy of serious consideration: Bloomfield died at Shefford, Bedfordshire, in 1823, after years of ill-health. In this book many of his poems are published again, as well as samples of both his prose and plays." Very Good in a dustwrapper with a slightly faded spine-panel.
