"Wiens: Eberhard W., Dr. phil., war im März 1798 zu Burgsteinfurt geboren. Nachdem er das Gymnasium zu Münster besucht und dort bereits als einer der talentvollsten Jünglinge gegolten hatte, studirte er in Berlin Philologie und kehrte 1821 als Lehrer der griechischen Sprache und Geschichte an daß Münsterische Gymnasium zurück, dem er seit 1831 Professor l-is zu seinem am 80. März 1848 erfolgten Tode ununterbrochen seine Kräfte widmete. Mit vorzüglichen Anlagen und einer anerkannten Lehrgabe ausgestattet. zählte er zu den beliebtesten und einflußreichsten Lehrern der Anstalt, wurde aber auch durch seine litterarische Thätigkeit weiteren Kreisen bekannt. In den Jahren 1827, 1840 und 1.851 besorgte er neue Auflagen von Kistemaker's [424] griechischer Sprachlehre (1791), 1834 und 1839 erschienen seine Untersuchungen über den Ursprung des Futurs und der Conditionale im Spanischen und Portugiesischen, 1837 solche über die Bedeutung des griechischen Optativs und Conjunctivs in Bedingungssätzen, und 1838 und 1846 bestimmte ihn seine große Liebe zur Musik, die ihn schon 1832 den Gesangunterricht und die Orgelbegleitung in der Schulmesse hatte übernehmen lassen, zur Herausgabe der Melodieen zum Gymnasialgesangbuch. Auf historischem Gebiete verdanken wir ihm außer einer Programmabhandllmg über die Unternehmungen Kaiser Karl's V. gegen die Raubstaaten Tunis, Algier und Mehedia (1832), die er 1844 durch eine Schrift über das Leben der Koriaren Horuck und Hairadin Barbarossa vervollständigte und einer Geschichte des Münsterischen Bischofs Franz Arnold V. Metternich (Westfäl. Zeitschr. 1843, 7l, 127152) noch mehrfache Beiträge zur Geschichte des Bischofs Christoph Bernhard v. Galen, nämlich: 1) eine Sammlung fragmentarischer Nachrichten (1834) zur Berichtigung der Biographie von Joh. v. Alpen; 2) eine Ausgabe des Surmondt'schen (Jzt1tus trjumpt18.1js (1839); Z) Beiträge zur Geschichte der Verschwörung des Adam v. d. Kette (Westfäl. Zeitschr. 17, 1841, S. 289321); 4) Nachrichten zur Charakteristik der Pestzeit von 1666 und über die ärztliche Behandlung dieser Krankheit, sowie Rechtfertigung einiger Klagen des Fürstbischofs über die Verräthereien der Generalstaaten (1843); 5) Die Belagerung der Stadt Münster im J. 1661 (Westfäl. Zeitschr. R, 1847, S. 170189). In der letzteren Abhandlung gibt W. tagebuchartige Aufzeichnungen aus einer gleichzeitigen Handschrift wieder, die sich aber nicht, wie er meint, auf das Jahr 1661, sondern 1657 beziehen. Cultur- und litterarhistorisch recht interessant sind Wiens' sieben Beiträge zur Geschichte des Münsterischen Schulwesens (1839), deren Veröffentlichung um so werthvoller wurde, als die darin zum Abdruck gelangten Originale jetzt meist verschollen sind."
