An eagle & crown device above a light gray printed decorative frame highlights the image. The subject is identified in the same light gray centered within the lower half of the sheet. "Specially taken for this work by Lock and Whitfield" is centered below the title. Near fine. Friedrich Wilhelm Nikolaus Karl (1831-1888) was German Emperor and King of Prussia for a period of 99 days in 1888, the year in which he passed away. The period came to be known as the Year of the Three Emperors as his father Wilhelm I passed away in March of that year and Frederick (Wilhelm's only son), afflicted with cancer of the larynx died in October. Though he professed a hatred of war, Crown Prince Frederick had distinguished himself in the Austro-Prussian and Franco-Prussian wars. He was admired by both friends and enemies for his humane conduct. Both a printing process and the print which it produces, Woodburytype was invented and patented by Walter B. Woodbury in 1864. A photomechanical process, Woodbury type prints are made from exposing a dichromate-sensitized sheet of gelatin to UV light shining through a photographic negative. Each area of the gelatin hardens to a depth in proportion to the amount of exposure to the light before it is then soaked in warm water. The relief image is then pressed onto a sheet of lead to create an intaglio metal printing plate.

The document above is one among many important manuscripts which John Frederick Lewis, a highly regarded philanthropist, lawyer, and early 20th-century collector, used as primary source material for a comprehensive genealogy of his forbears. His chronological narrative was meant to chart the various world-historical developments and circumstances which ultimately led to the confluence of Mr. Lewis' Continental ancestors and those of the Mayflower Colony, and it extended even to his own lifetime. Housed in altogether fifteen portfolio volumes, the project was the culmination of decades of painstaking research and discerning collecting of the highest order. Condition: Good. August 29, 1868., 1868. Good. - An autograph document, dated August 29, 1868, penned in a secretarial hand on 13-3/8 inch high by 8-3/8 inch wide creamy white paper signed "Friedrich Wilhelm Kpz [Crown Prince]" by the future Emperor and King of Prussia. The document is addressed to the Royal General in Command of the Army Corps at Breslau who at the time was Wilhelm von Tumpling. The document orders that a particular Second Lieutenant be named his Ordnance Officer during Army Corps maneuvers in mid-September. The document is annotated and signed on the verso by four officers in the chain of command. The first, dated August 31 from Breslau, is signed by the Prussian General der Kavallerie Wilhelm von Tumpling. Wilhelm von Tumpling (1809-1884) commanded a division in the Austro-Prussian War and the VI Army Corps during the Franco-Prussian War. Folded several times vertically and once horizontally with short tears to the top and bottom edges of the vertical folds and a longer tear along most of the horizontal center fold which has been repaired with clear archival document tape. There is early tape repair to two of the short tears at the top and bottom of the document. Frederick (Friedrich) III (1831-1888.), the German Emperor and King of Prussia for 99 days. The son of the King of Prussia, Emperor Wilhelm I, Frederick was raised in his family's military tradition. Although a reluctant warrior Frederick served in high levels of command in the 3 wars that led to German unification. In the Second Schleswig War of 1864 he was an advisor on the staff of Field Marshal Wrangel. During the Austro-Prussian War of 1866 he commanded the Prussian Second Army. He turned a potential stalemate into a Prussian victory at the Battle of Koenigraetz. In the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71 he was Commander of the Third Army, leading his forces to victories in the Battles of Wissembourg and Worth. At the Siege of Sedan his troops surrounded the French army and captured Emperor Napoleon III. Frederick was a vigorous opponent of Bismarck and was popular with ordinary soldiers.

Add to basketAn extensive manuscript, being Kaiser Wilhelm's unpublished translation into German of an article covering political theory from the English journal, The Quarterly Review. The original article by Goldsworthy Lowes Dickinson, published in the October 1900 issue of the journal (pp. 359-80), was nominally a review of eight recent books on political philosophy, among them Heinrich von Treitschke's Politik, E. L. Godkin's Problems of Modern Democracy, and Theodore Roosevelt's American Ideals. In practice, as standard for the Quarterly Review, the article used the reviewed works as a starting point for a wider discourse. The article would have clearly appealed to the Kaiser. It begins by asking whether political philosophy even exists, and the author notes that historically, political philosophy is characterized by absolutism. However, he observes that there is now a shift towards relativism. The trend in modern politics is the state's growing power and size, those in control increasingly influenced by plutocracy. He argues that the House of Commons gradually ceded its power to the Cabinet, risking a shift in British democracy towards the American plutocratic system. The solution is to preserve an aristocracy, but one based on training and ability rather than birth. Wilhelm has dated the first page "25.12.1900" and "2.2.1901", and the last page "17.2.1901", presumably the dates between which he translated it. The lengthy project totalled around ten thousand words. He has made a few corrections and underlined some words for emphasis. Generally, the manuscript is written confidently, in Wilhelm's bold hand. Wilhelm had an English mother (the eldest child of Queen Victoria) and spoke English fluently, though from his boyhood preferred the Prussian militarist and autocratic teachings of his tutors to the British liberalism of his mother. Wilhelm had been Kaiser for 13 years when he undertook the translation, and his reasons for doing so are unknown. He was always deeply interested in political ideas, the preservation of the German order, and in Britain's development and its threat to German power. A typed transcript of the German translation, and a photocopy of the Quarterly Review article, is included. Manuscript, 38 bifolia with full-page manuscript on 77 pages and running heading "Politik" on first page of each except the first; page size 235 x 202 mm; Wilhelm's coat of arms embossed in silver at head. Housed in custom quarter leather solander box. Very light soiling. In excellent condition.
