Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. First Edition. 440 pages (complete). Willcocks exemplified the Victorian officer class. This memoir records his soldiering before his posting to the South African War, the Great War and his eventual time as Governor of Bermuda. He saw much action and was amply decorated. This copy has been given a new leather spine by a previous owner (this is neat and clubbable). The boards are much worn all about. They are scuffed and marked. Within, the contents are most agreeable - especially given the book's age. The pages are tight, clean, clear, thick, healthy and hale. fk. First edition, signed limited issue, number 102 of 150 copies signed on behalf of the publishers. The signed issue is printed on large, thick paper and contains eight photogravure portraits of Indian officers who served during the conflict and of the author, which are not present in the trade edition. Willcocks commanded the Indian Corps on the Western Front, where his troops faced acute difficulties: unfamiliar weapons, inadequate artillery, language barriers, and scant preparation for the climate and trench warfare. Morale suffered under heavy casualties, bitter winter conditions, and the loss of experienced officers; isolated incidents of desertion and collapse under fire were then used to support damaging contemporary criticisms of Indian soldiers, despite the troops' substantial service and heavy losses. Willcocks wrote this volume to provide a counter-perspective: "So erroneous are many of the opinions and so ill-natured have been some of the criticisms of the part taken by the Indian Corps in Flanders, that it has been impracticable to avoid writing strongly when I considered it necessary, and hence I have not hesitated to do so" (p. xix). Trade edition mentioned in Perkins, p. 374. Quarto. Photogravure portrait frontispiece and 8 plates, all with tissue guards, 4 folding maps, folding facsimile, maps in text. Original red cloth over bevelled boards, spine lettered in gilt, front cover decorated in gilt, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Binding sunned and slightly marked, spine ends a little bumped, endpapers foxed, plates bright: a very good copy.
