Jones's Essay on the Law of Bailments is among the earliest systematic treatments of the subject in English law and a foundational text in the development of Anglo-American commercial jurisprudence. Drawing extensively on Roman and continental civil law sources, it played a critical role in introducing comparative legal method into English and, subsequently, American legal thought. Its influence in the United States was profound: Joseph Story drew heavily on Jones in his Commentaries on the Law of Bailments (1832), which became the standard American authority; through Story and other jurists, Jones's synthesis of Roman-law principles became embedded in American common law doctrine. The work was widely cited by early American courts and commentators and helped standardize the classification and obligations of bailees in emerging commercial practice. Jones, an eminent jurist and Orientalist and a close associate of Johnson, Gibbon, and Burke, served as a judge of the Supreme Court of Judicature at Calcutta from 1783 until his death, where his engagement with non-English legal traditions informed his comparative approach.
