Half-Leather. Condition: Very Good +. No Jacket. This is a set of 6 books with green/teal leather spines and corners and marbled boards. These have been "touched up" at corners and sides of spines with a color that doesn't quite match. Each book has a frontispiece of a different person with some transfer to title page. Each book also has foldout charts: 1- three, 2-three, 3 - six, 4 - two, 5-four and 6-eight. Edges of pages are lightly tanned but pages are clean, tight and unmarked. Beautifully gilt decorated spines with gilt maritime tooling to the compartments, numbers to oval brown labels. Rubbing to the base of the front joint of Vol I which impacts the base of the spine. Some of the folding tables have folded corners but are in good condition. An unusual and attractive binding. Vol. I: xii, xxxii, 404pp; frontispiece, 5 diagrams in the text, 8 engraved portraits, and 4 folding tables (no 1-4). Vol. II: vii, [i], 396pp; 2 diagrams in the text, 3 engraved portraits, and 3 folding tables (5-7). Condition Report Externally Spine - very good condition - gilt titles to red and cream labels, gilt numbers to circular brown leather labels centred to cream compartments, five gilt raised bands with six beautifully gilt decorated compartments, worn and rubbed with minor loss of gilt to the base of Vol I. Joints - very good condition - rubbed and worn, rubbing to the base of the front joint of Vol I which impacts the base of the spine. Corners - very good condition - bumped and worn. Boards - good condition - half calf with marbled paper covered boards, gently marked and scratched. Page edges - good condition - darkened to the top edge, all marbled, some misfolded to Vol VI. Binding - very good condition - attractive and sound. See above and photos. Internally Hinges - very good condition - sound. Paste downs - good condition - marbled paper paste downs, bookplates. End papers - good condition - marbled end papers, tanned and gently foxed subsequently. Pages - good condition - frontispiece to Vol I, 23 engraved portraits, 38 diagrams in the text and 28 folding tables complete, some foxing and tanning to the page edges especially around the folding tables, page edges folded to Vol VI (see above). Written by William James, with and additional account of the Burmese War by Captain Chamier. William M. James is a noted maritime historian whose work on the French Revolution are among his most highly regarded. Captain Frederick Chamier was a naval officer and novelist, who wrote a number of popular naval works throughout the 19th century. Illustrated with 25 portrait across the 6 volumes. With 5 folding plates to the rear of volume I, 3 to volume II, 6 to volume III, 2 to volume IV, 3 to volume V, and 5 to volume VI. Collated complete. A fascinating insight into the history of the British navy. Rebound in a uniform cloth binding. Externally smart, with light rubbing to the spine and extremities. Light spots to the top edge and to the fore edge. Internally generally firmly bound, strained in places. Fronitispiece to volume VI is detached but present with binding strained to the title page. Pages are generally clean with light age toning and to the occasional spot. Numerous folding plates to the rear of each volume. Very Good Indeed. book.

Twin gilt fillets frame the boards, dentelles and gilt top edge. There is a degree of rubbing and weakness to the shoulders and slight blotchiness to the spines. Embellished with 24 full page engraved plates and 28 folding tables. A very good looking set of this great work which covers the period from 'The Declaration of War by France in 1793, to the Accession of George IV'.
