Hardcover. Condition: Fair. Flat-signed by Kelley on front endpage. Front cover is heavily creased, bottom corner is bumped, pages unmarked. 56 page art exhibition catalog. "Kelley's brand of success is his ability to translate the sensuous moment of discovery into an approximation on paint-covered canvas. His working method is to go out into the countryside and work up small canvases on site, along with sketches and photos, and then return to the studio with his trove for further refinement. There he may work up the smaller canvases, or use them and the photos as memory guides to get a start on larger and perhaps more complex renditions. Then the heavy lifting begins. The large canvases challenge and inspire because of the conceptual challenges the artist sets himself. The complex mesmerizing patterning and infinitude of subtle and transcendent color, which charcterize Kelley's finest, paintings - that shout for pure joy - are actually the result of hard concerted work. Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Inscribed Presentation copy of A Different Drummer William Melvin Kelley First Edition First Printing 1962; NF book, some toning to front pastedown and end papers where it looks like a piece of paper was laid in. Tiny dent to top edge of front board, internally clean, binding square and tight, VG+ or better jacket, minor rubbing to extremities, a couple micro-chips to top and bottom of front panel, a negligible damp stain to the base of spine.Very scarce even without inscription, This is Kelley's fierce debut and best known novel about a fictional state in the deep south nestled between Alabama and Mississippi whose black residents, sick of their treatment, depart in a mass exodus one day. The novel examines the racial problem in a new manner, told entirely from the white residents' perspective. The novel combines idealism and a deep cynicism and examines the frailty and courage of the human heart. Kelley had drifted into relative obscurity until a recent New Yorker piece unearthed his work and described him as "The Lost Giant of American literature". Kelley is also known for introducing the world to the term "woke" in a 1962 NYT article titled "If You're Woke, You Dig It".Inscription reads: "For J? - Who shall be known henceforth as the secretary. The imposing, monolithic, monopolistic bulk of Doubleday would have been frightening and awesome without you answering the phone. Sincerely Bill 6/(9 or 4)/62". signed and inscribed by author or artist.
