8vo. [10], 378 pp., plus 6 pp. publ. ads. Frontisp., numerous plates. Blue cloth, white lettering on front cover & spine (minor rubbing to spine, shelfwear to fore-edges, minor wear to corners), still VG copy, from the library of Doris Aggers (1872-1946), and Maude Aggers (1873-1954), daughters of George Aggers who operated a large cherry orchard operation in White Salmon, WA named Overlook Farm, w/ colour lithograph quotations laid in. First American edition of this curious semi-autobiographical Irish novel in which a young editor Fergus O'Hagan's represents liberal Catholicism's new Ireland efforts to lead Irish society toward a new era of cooperative commonwealth, encounters an atavistic religious and visceral traditional Catholicism which defeats him, and a young sacrificing radical priest is chastised by the diocesan bishop and sent abroad to raise finds for a Church at Tara. O'Ryan (1867-1942) was a noted Labor supporter, and journalist who was editor of the Irish Nation, and then as Associate Editor of the Daily Herald focused on clerical opposition in Ireland during the first part of the 20th century, and the efforts of Cardinal Logue to silence him.
