Hardcover. Condition: Good. From Wikipedia: Oscar Joseph Slater (1872 - 1948) was the victim of a notorious miscarriage of justice in Scotland. Wrongly convicted of murder and sentenced to death, he was freed after almost two decades of hard labour at Scotland's HM Prison Peterhead through the efforts of multiple journalists, la…wyers, and writers, including Sherlock Holmes author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The first edition of this book in 1910 was instrumental in challenging the fairness of the verdict. This copy is good in green cloth, with gilt titles on the spine. Ex-library, with typical library stamps and labels. The binding is sound, and except for the library indications, the text is clean and unmarked. FO22. Third Edition with new introduction and appendices.

Red Cloth Hardback. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. 1929. x, 326pp. B&W illustrations. "John Donald Merrett, a University student, was tried in the High Court of Justiciary at Edinburgh in February, 1927, for the murder of his mother and for uttering forged cheques upon her banking account. His trial which lasted for seven…days, is by far the most notable Scottish 'cause célèbre' of post-war years. It abounds in psychological, evidential and medico-legal problems, and provides a story strange and arresting in motif. Finally, it is a most amazing mystery, which the jury's verdict on the murder charge entirely failed to resolve". Publisher's red cloth with gilt titles to spine. General shelf wear and light soiling to spine. Offsetting to endpapers. Previous owner's name to ffep.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. First. From Wikipedia: Mary Blandy (c. 1720 - 1752) was an eighteenth century British murderer. In 1751, she poisoned her father, Francis Blandy, with arsenic. She claimed that she thought the arsenic was a love potion that would make her father approve of her relationship with William Henry Cran…stoun, an army officer and son of a Scottish nobleman. On Easter Monday, 6 April 1752, Blandy was hanged outside Oxford Castle prison for the crime of parricide. Her case attracted a great deal of attention from the press. Many pamphlets claiming to be the "genuine account" or the "genuine letters" of Mary Blandy were published in the months following her execution. The reaction among the press was mixed. While some believed her version of the story, most thought that she was lying. The debate over whether or not she was morally culpable for her crime continued for years after her death. In the nineteenth century, her case was re-examined in several texts with a more sympathetic light, and people began to think of her as a "poor lovesick girl". This copy is very good in green cloth with gilt titles on the spine. Ex-library with typical library stamps and labels. Sturdy library rebinding with reinforced hinges. Very slight wear at the corners. Except for the library indications, the text is quite clean and unmarked. FO22.
