Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very good. Mark of ownership. Ex-libris op schutblad. Foxing. Frontispiece en titelvignet. English This is a mid-19th-century A. & C. Black (Edinburgh) multi-volume edition of The Poetical Works of Sir Walter Scott, Bart., illustrated with steel engravings after watercolours by J. M. W. Turner. The series forms part of the long publishing tradition associated with Scott?s works after his death, inspired in part by the activities of the Abbotsford Club?founded in the 1830s to honour Scott?s literary legacy and preserve historical texts connected with his Abbotsford estate. Each volume in this edition contains two principal illustrations: a full-page steel-engraved frontispiece and a title-page vignette, both engraved by leading 19th-century craftsmen. In the case of The Lady of the Lake (Volume III), the frontispiece depicts Loch Katrine, and the title vignette shows Loch Achray, both engraved by William Miller after Turner?s celebrated landscape designs. Turner?s series of Scottish views, originally commissioned in the 1830s for earlier Cadell editions, became iconic visual companions to Scott?s romantic poetry and were reused in later A. & C. Black printings such as this one.

Black (Edinburgh) edition of The Poetical Works of Sir Walter Scott, Bart. is illustrated with steel engravings after watercolours by J. M. W. Turner, a continuation of the Turner-illustrated tradition associated with the legacy of the Abbotsford Club. In this volume V, the frontispiece shows the junction of the Rivers Greta and Tees near Rokeby, engraved by John Pye after Turner?s original design. The title-page vignette depicts Staffa (including Fingal?s Cave), engraved by Edward Goodall after Turner?s atmospheric treatment of the Hebridean scene. First commissioned for Cadell?s edition in the 1830s, these views were reused here in this early Victorian reissue to complement Scott?s verse with vivid landscapes.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very good. Mark of ownership. Ex-libris op schutblad. Foxing. Frontispiece en titelvignet. English This volume VI from the A. & C. Black Turner-illustrated edition of The Poetical Works of Sir Walter Scott, Bart. carries particular biographical resonance, pairing Scott?s poetry with views closely tied to his own life and literary inspiration. The frontispiece presents Loch Coriskin (now commonly spelled Loch Coruisk) on the Isle of Skye, engraved by Henry Le Keux after Turner?s dramatic Highland composition. The title-page vignette shows Abbotsford, Scott?s own home, creating a direct visual link between poet and place. These plates, originally prepared in the 1830s for the Cadell edition, were among the most admired in the series for their blend of topographical accuracy and romantic atmosphere.

Each volume contains a full-page steel-engraved frontispiece and a title-page vignette. In Rokeby (Volume IV), the frontispiece presents Dryburgh Abbey?Scott?s burial place?while the title vignette depicts Bowes Towers, both engraved by William Miller after Turner?s atmospheric landscapes. Turner?s original series of Scottish and northern English views, commissioned in the 1830s for earlier Cadell editions, became enduring visual companions to Scott?s verse and were faithfully reused in later A. & C. Full title - THE POETICAL WORKS OF SIR WALTER SCOTT, BART. COMPLETE IN ONE VOLUME. WITH ALL HIS INTRODUCTIONS, NOTES, VARIOUS READINGS, AND NOTES BY J.G. LOCKHART, ESQ. ILLUSTRATED BY NUMEROUS ENGRAVINGS ON STEEL, AFTER J.M.W. TURNER, R.A. [4], i-iv, 1-823 pages. Hardcover: H 25.25cm x L 17.75cm. Fine binding of red morocco leather with bright gilt tooling to spine and boards; spine embellished with five slightly raised bands delineating six compartments with title compartment having gilt lettering "Scott's Poetical Works;" gilt tooling along boards' slender edges with leather's inner margin edges bordering pastedowns featuring alternating pattern of gilt-tooled stars; no bindery ticket or mark present but undoubtedly the work of a finer artisan and probably either Scottish or British. Light vertical furrows to spine with a few spots of light surface scuffing to bands; light soiling/staining to boards; some scuffing at spine ends and along joints; mild wear at board corners. All edges gilt with unsigned fore-edge painting showing a steam locomotive and passenger cars traversing a ten-arched bridge with narrow river having sailboat and a few sailors headed upstream; a few figures and animals enliven the shoreline landscape. Green silk page marker sewn-in to binding. Front free endpaper and probably a front flyleaf neatly removed; first leaf present is unpaged b/w frontispiece followed by unpaged b/w pictorial title which too is immediately followed by unpaged text title leaf and Notice leaf. Front pastedown has older blue ink signature "FW Parrott" with frontis verso having past bookseller's pencil notation at top right and bolder four-line ink inscription "From 'Nutwood' | in remembrance of | Miss Wakefield | September 1910" as perhaps those are clues to past provenance that might aid in attributing the fore-edge painting and perhaps even the binder (a Google search does turn up a Mary Wakefield who whose manor home Nutwood was located in Grange-over-Sands, England). Frontis verso also has some light surface peeling and soiling. Pale yellow front pastedown and rear endpapers. A few spots of soiling and minimal foxing to interior pages. Binding is firm. Still a handsome book. Double column text; b/w plates on unpaged leaves with at least one foldout facsimile. Presented in a fairly modern sturdy red cloth slipcase which has some rubbing and mild soiling/staining to panels; seams are firm; slipcase fits book fairly well but is fractionally taller and thus likely was not custom crafted for this specific volume. Jpeg images available upon request. Please note that this thick book has an approximate shipping weight of 6 pounds (2.72 kg) and will require additional postage and insurance above AbeBooks' preset rate.

First Edition Signed
Paperback. First Edition. Complete run of seven issues plus the final, rare "Suppressed Issue" produced in Canada. Landmark article "The Kentucky Derby is Decadent and Depraved" in issue #4 signed by Ralph Steadman in red ink. A very Near Fine set, bright and clean set; truly excellent shape. No subscriber labels. Some wraps and contents age-toned, staples occasionally rusted. Scanlan's was a counterculture magazine that broke down nearly as many boundaries as its predecessor, Ramparts, during its short existence. It launched "gonzo journalism" with the article "The Kentucky Derby is Decadent and Depraved" by Hunter S. Thompson, illustrated by Ralph Steadman, in its June 1970 issue-- that's the one with Nixon's face being punched into oblivion. Steadman's splattery signature graces the negative space around the derby-goer's head on the article's title page. He and Thompson would go on to collaborate on the book Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, which brought gonzo journalism widespread popularity. The set also features work by R. Crumb, Alfred McCoy (author of The Politics of Heroin), JFK investigator Jim Garrison's cohort William Turner, and Robert Altman well as other Thompson (AKA Raoul Duke) and Steadman work.
