Trade paperback. Condition: Good. Presumed First Edition, First printing. [3], iii, [1], 391, [37] pages. Illustrations (some in color). Final section is on Reunions and has other selected pictures. Inscribed and dated by compiler on Index page (near front), Cover has some wear, soiling, and creasing. Front cover describes this work as "A Collection of stories as told by WWII pilots who graduated with Class 45-B, US Army Air Corps." Ed was born May 17, 1924 and died on Christmas Eve 2017. Ed graduated from Baker High School in 1943, and promptly joined the Army Air Corps . A Pullman car ride took him to flight school and America's Flying Fortress, the B-17 - the pivotal event in his life. America's G.I. Bill opened the door to further education and a B. S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from The University of Tennessee (Martin) in 1949, the very year he secured employment with Gulf Power Company in Pensacola. Following a transfer to Birmingham in 1965, Ed experienced a meteoric rise with Southern Company Services (Alabama Power, Georgia Power, Gulf Power, and Mississippi Power) culminating with his appointment as Senior Executive Vice-President. Ed authored three books: My Autobiography, Wild Tales of the Blue Yonder, and Essays, Odds and Ends. Class 45-B was the second class of pilots graduated on April 15, 1945. It is doubtful that any pilot graduating in Class 45-B experienced actual combat during WWII. However, many 45-B pilots stayed either in the active service, or in the reserves, and were called to active during during the Korean Conflict and/or during the Viet Nam War. The 21 stories included in this collection are all from pilots who graduated in Class 45-B. The pilots who submitted stories represent all three training commands--the Easter, the Central and the Western. A few of the pilots submitting stories were together during the entire training program. The stories compiled here are exactly as they were written--there has been no editing. The writers were encouraged to include a short section up front describing their life prior to entering the Army Air Corps. It is hoped that in reading these stories the reader will come away with some understanding of the trials, the stresses and the joys that was the experience of becoming pilots during a defining period in their lives. Reunions of Pilot Class 45-B began in 1980 and at least 7 were held and the 8th scheduled (for 2003).
