Hardcover. Condition: Fair. First edition. 12mo, worn original cloth, with all faults Presentation Copy (?): inscribed, "For Sissy, from her ever loving brother, F." Of this title poem, Oliver Wendell Holmes wrote, " 'The Old Sergeant', a wonderful poem for directness and literalness of narrative, combined with an imaginative grandeur which makes it one of the most impressive poems in our literature -I should be inclined to say in any literature." Ralph Waldo Emerson, in his Preface to his PARNASSUS, wrote, "I have inserted only one of the remarkable poems of Forceythe Willson, a young Wisconsin poet of extraordinary promise, who died very soon after this was written." Actually born in upstate New York, this Indiana poet raised -and may have equipped - a company of Union volunteers. "The Old Sergeant," may be based on a New Albany, Indiana man. [Not in the Harris AMERICAN POETRY].
