Rosenbach: A Biography; by Edwin Wolf 2nd with John Fleming; The World Publishing Company, Cleveland and New York, 1960. First edition. From the blurb - Abraham Simon Wolf Rosenbach had plump red cheeks, a twinkle in his eye, walked - as a friend once said - as a penguin would walk, if a penguin could walk, loke Rosy, puffed everlastingly on a pipe or cigar, drank a bottle of whiskey a day, and was the greatest antiquarian bookseller the world has seen. Without much pressing he would admit as much. "The Doctor", as he was familiarly known to collector-friends and employees, for decades bought most of the important rare books and manuscripts sold at auction in England and America. Front-page articles heralded his achievements and his name became synonymous with great books at great prices. Here, re-created by two of the men who worked with him and knew him best, is a wonderfully rounded, human picture of the man himself. No one interested in books, in salesmanship, in people, will fail to be thoroughly absorbed by this warm and appreciative biography of one of the most notable figures of our time. Bookseller's note - I acquired my copy of this book early in my book collecting days and it was like reading a thriller. I think this planted the germ that eventually grew roots into my bookselling career of today. I have read hundreds of books about books and book people and if I had to declare my hero, it would have to be Rosenbach. This book, 616 pages, is in near-fine condition in a near-fine dust jacket, that is enclosed in a protective mylar wrap.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Frontispiece, 301 pp. Original cloth. Very Good. 'Abraham Simon Wolf Rosenbach (July 22, 1876 July 1, 1952) was an American collector, scholar, and seller of rare books and manuscripts. In London, where he frequently attended the auctions at Sotheby's, he was known as 'The Terror of the Auction Room.' In Paris, he was called 'Le Napoléon des Livres', which translates to 'The Napoleon of Books.' Many others referred to him as 'Dr. R.', a 'Robber Baron' and 'the Greatest Bookdealer in the World'. Rosenbach is credited with popularizing the collecting of American literature at a time when only European literature was considered collectible. He also advanced the idea of book collecting as a means of investment and published several articles and books to increase interest in rare books and manuscripts. He bought and sold numerous items throughout his life, including eight Gutenberg Bibles, more than 30 Shakespeare's First Folios, a copy of the Bay Psalm Book and the manuscripts of Ulysses and Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. The lifetime total of his purchases is estimated to be worth more than $75,000,000 in 2019. . . . In 1946, a book made by thirty of Rosenbach's friends, entitled To Dr. R, featured a series of literary and bibliographical essays written in honor of his 70th birthday' (Wikipedia).
