A successful department store owner and wartime Minister of Food, Lord Woolton became Conservative Party Chairman from 1946 to 1955. He is now chiefly remembered for his 'national loaf' made with wholemeal brown flour, which replaced the ordinary white variety, to the distaste of most housewives, and 'Woolton' pie, a vegetable pie created at the Savoy Hotel in London by its then Maitre Chef de Cuisine, Francis Latry. It was one of a number of recipes commended to the British public by the Ministry of Food during the War to enable a nutritious diet to be maintained despite shortages and rationing of many types of food, especially meat. 1p., 8vo. In good condition, with hole from paperclip at top left, and small rust spot to left-hand margin. Woolton's signature has been underlined by Luckhurst in red pencil. He thanks him for the invitation to take the chair 'at the meeting of the Society on Wednesday, 19th January, when Mr. Gray is reading a paper on "The Industrial Designer and Consumer Goods", but must decline, as he is 'already engaged for the whole of that day'.

He begins: 'Since you spoke in the Education Debate in the House of Lords on the 9th February I have been meaning to take up with you a controversial point to which I did not refer in reply since you were not in the House.' He quotes a passage in which Chorley 'dealt with University students', giving detailed reasons for contesting his 'figures about awards'. He concludes with reference to a review by the Minister of Education of 'both the maintenance grants which are paid by his department and the income scales by which the parents' share of expenses are assessed. But that is another matter.'.
