Presents Wayne Koestenbaum's "Double Talk: The Erotics of Male Literary Collaboration". A subject the author was naturally born to write about: Men writing books together. "Sigmund Freud and Josef Breuer on hysteria, J. A. Symonds and Havelock Ellis on sexuality, a novel by Ford Madox Ford (and Joseph Conrad), 'The Waste Land' of T. S. Eliot (and Ezra Pound), even the 'Lyrical Ballads' of Wordsworth (and Coleridge). The author of the second work and recipient of Wordsworth's letter is likely to be John Murdoch Wilmot Marsh (1819-1848), of whom not much is known except for his studies at Jesus College, Oxford (Foster, Alumni Oxonienses 1715-1886, v.3). He was the son of John Marsh (1747-1823), a Commissioner, Comptroller and Chairman of the Victualling Board of the Navy, and brother of Reverend George Augustus Eliott Marsh (1790-1867), Rector of Bangor Iscoed Monachorum (Bangor-on-Dee Parish, Wales), whom Wordsworth appears to have him confused with. INTRODUCTION One of the rarest of Wordsworth's published works, and inscribed in his own hand, this paradoxical text nestled within a volume of parliamentary pamphlets enacts a compelling interplay between the personal and the political. In contrast to his earlier, radical, political sensibilities as a champion of freedom and the common man, here we find a defender of privilege, stability, and aristocratic power. This puzzling shift is compounded by the fact that the aristocrats in whose service he places his formidable pen are those who once brought his own family close to financial ruin. Two Addresses to the Freeholders of Westmorland (1818) is a salvo in the contested election for the county seat, in which reformer Henry Brougham challenged the entrenched power of the Lowther family. Wordsworth's allegiance was unambiguous: he denounced Brougham and rallied the electorate to the Lowther cause, invoking "rational liberty" as the watchword of stability against the dangers of reform. His pamphlet aimed not only at influencing a local election but at shoring up a political order he feared was imperilled by radical currents tendencies he had once himself embraced. POLITICAL PARADOX The political position articulated in this pamphlet is difficult to reconcile with the Wordsworth of the 1790s, who had once written in support of liberty and the French Revolution. By 1818, however, we find him expressing suspicion of reformers and defending the established order. How should we interpret this change? Some have seen it as the consequence of his disillusionment with the Revolution's descent into terror and the subsequent rise of Napoleon; others have suggested that it reflects a deeper anxiety about disorder at home. What remains clear is that the spectre of France haunted British political discourse, and the pamphlets bound alongside Wordsworth's express similar uneasiness, returning again and again to the same issue in the years leading to the Reform Act of 1832: whether extending suffrage would consolidate the constitution or threaten its dissolution. Read in this light, Wordsworth's pamphlet is not an isolated outburst, but part of a wider debate about how Britain should understand and respond to the lessons of the French Revolution. PERSONAL PARADOX Yet the paradox is also deeply personal. The Lowther family, in whose defence Wordsworth wrote so passionately, had nearly ruined his own: Sir James Lowther's refusal to settle a large debt owed to the poet's father, John Wordsworth, left the family in a precarious state until after Sir James's death. Why, then, did William lend his pen to their cause? Was this an act of loyalty to the stability of the social system, even against private grievance? Or was it, more prosaically, an act of self-preservation? Several years earlier, Wordsworth had been appointed Distributor of Stamps for Westmorland, a post yielding a substantial salary of £400 per year that secured his family's finances. To what extent did his political allegiance reflect conviction, gratitude, pressure, or simply the limits of his radicalism once his own stability was achieved? The answers remain unsettled, and therein lies the enduring fascination of the pamphlet. JOHN HILLS (1804-1848) This copy is inscribed in Wordsworth's hand: "John Hills, from the author, W. Wordsworth Esq, Rydal Mt." (i.e. Wordsworth's home in the English Lake District, Rydal Mount). The two families had intricate ties, both social and literary: Hills had been a school companion of Wordsworth's son John at Sedbergh, a friendship that endured into adulthood and sustained an ongoing exchange between the families.
