Twentieth Century Impressions of Burma is part of a series on the British Empire that deals with the empire's history, people, commerce, industries, and resources. This publication is one of a now lengthy series, designed to give a literary survey of the various component parts of the British Empire and of leading countries in which British capital was extensively invested, or in which British political interests were centered. (Twentieth Century Impressions of Siam was also reprinted by White Lotus.) Burma at one time formed an integral part of Britain's Indian empire, but it was something more than an Indian province. Its geographical position, with a frontier that marches with the boundaries of the Chinese Empire and of French Indochina, a mighty waterway that gives access to the vast mountain regions of the great Asiatic range, and a coastline that stretches for 1,200 miles along the eastern side of the Bay of Bengal, is one of exceptional importance, and that importance increased as the inevitable development of the great continental railway system of Asia brought the ports of the Straits of Malacca into direct communication with India, and eventually through India with the countries of Europe. These prophetic words are more true today than hundred years ago. In this work, an attempt has been made to deal exhaustively with every phase of Burmese life. The history of the country is fully treated, and graphic pictures are presented by exceptional writers of the religious and social life of this, perhaps most fascinating people of Asia who owed allegiance to Britain. The administration, law, and finance of Burma are dealt with by experts; a full account is also given of the commerce, industries, and social aspects of everyday life, while clear and interesting descriptions are furnished of the principal population centers of the country. The book's illustrations, reproductions of hundreds of photographs, are exceptionally varied and interesting, particularly viewing them from a modern perspective. Book.

Publisher's full red morocco, spine with raised bands, gilt lettered direct to two panels and decorated to the others, circular gilt vignette to the upper board featuring an illustration of a sphinx, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Black and white map to the front of the volume, profusely illustrated with black and white photographs thereafter, first several leaves ruled in gilt. Some trivial light spotting to endpapers, binding a bit rubbed at corners, generally a very good copy of this handsomely produced work on Egypt in the original publisher's leather binding. 'Originally designed to give in an attractive form full and reliable information with reference to the outlying parts of the British Empire, the scope of this series of works has been extended to cover the whole field of British commercial and $3 political influence. In some instances, governments seeking to place accurate knowledge of their countries before settlers, traders, and investors have published books and pamphlets from time to time; but there are other centres in which official enterprise in this direction has not been possible, or, at all events, in which action has not been taken, and it is in this field that the publishers are now working. So far, they have found ample justification for their labours in the widespread public interest taken in their operations in the countries and colonies which have been the sphere of their work, and in the extremely cordial reception given by the Press, British, foreign, and colonial, to the completed results' (preface).

Maps, numerous black and white photographic illustrations, 848pp; full pebble-grained morocco, gilt decorated, spine gilt-lettered and ruled between raised compartments, edges fully gilt, 31 x 24cms, modern marbled endpapers and hinges neatly strengthened, worming to the boards and (mainly) affecting the preliminary leaves and the final fifty leaves, the boards with a little edgewear, a few gatherings a little proud, but otherwise a good, sound, clean and complete copy of a work uncommon on the market. A good copy of a now remarkably scarce work profusely illustrated with remarkable black and white photographic portraits and panoramas, and detailed chapters on everything from history, geography, culture and specific industries like shipping, manufacturing, agriculture, and trade. Whilst earlier works in the series focussed exclusively on British colonial interests (Western Australia, Natal, Ceylon and British Malaya), the editor notes that: "More than one half the imports and exports of China passes through the various Treaty Ports, and it would have been a negation of one of the avowed objects of these publications if no attempt had been to show the present-day tendency of this trade and how the proportion borne by the British Empire compares with that of its competitors". The series served as a handsome soft power testament to British colonial might and aspiration.
