Erste Auflage: 1627. Und danach viele andere bis zu einer heutigen…print-on-demand Version. Ein vorwiegend kirchenmusisch bekannter Kollege interpretierte diesen Erfolg als zeitgemäßen Umgang eines Protestantenmenschen mit der umgebenden Welt: Wudrians Buch half ihm, sich "die so elende/ böse und verderbte Zeit/ darinnen jetzo fromme Christen leben müssen", gewissenhaft vom Leibe zu halten.Zwar denen rohen und fein liederlich und leicht gesinnten Christen und Politischen Welt-Hertzen scheinet sie wohl so böse nicht/ empfinden sie auch so harte nicht/ sonderlich weil sie in der Welt oben schweben/ und über andere herrschen/ denselben befehlen/ gebieten/ nur ihrer Lust gebrauchen/ und damit wol andere plagen/ unbarmhertzig drücken und pressen/ sich wenig kümmern um den Schaden Joseph. Denn bey denen ist eitel Freude und Wonne/ Ochsen würgen/ Schaffe schlachten/ Fleisch essen/ Wein trincken/ und sprechen: Lasset uns essen und trincken/ wir sterben doch morgen." Die protestantische Ethik 150 Jahre nach Ihrer Erfindung - und ganz im Sinne ihres Erfinders. Luther war sich im Umgang mit der Welt sicher: "Wir sind mit unserem Leib und Gut dem Teufel unterworfen und Fremde, Gäste in einer Welt, deren Fürst und Gott der Teufel ist. Das Brot, das wir essen, das Getränk, das wir trinken, die Kleider, die wir anziehen, mehr noch, die Luft, die wir atmen, und alles, was zu unserem fleischlichen Leben hegört, ist des Teufels." (siehe: D. Martin Luthers Epistel-Auslegung. 4. Band: Der Galaterbrief; hgeg. v. Hermann Kleinknecht; 2. Aufl., Göttingen 1987. Für unseren Pastor der Hauptkirche zu St. Peter in Hamburg war dies ein seelsorgerischer Imperativ. Er prägte seinen Gläubigen ein, dass es ein "großes Unglück sei, ohne Anfechtung und Kreuz (zu) leben". Sie sollten sich merken: "wenn uns Gott streicht und züchtigt, so spüren wir daraus, daß er uns in allen Gnaden gedenke". Und so war dann seine Kreuz-Schule eine Unterweisung in Sachen Geduld und Leiden und dies in dem Wissen, daß "der Christen Acker.das Kreuz (ist), die Samen.die Thränen (sind), die Frucht die ewige Freude (ist)": "Daher Lutherus spricht: wenn wir wüßten, wie viel Gutes im Kreuz und Leiden verborgen stecke, wir würden uns darum reißen und schlagen.Denn gleichwie aus einem Säm ein viel Körnlein wachsen: also wird aus einer Trübsal viel Freude werden; und je mehr der Acker unsers Herzens mit Trübsal gedüngt und durchpflügt wird, so viel mehr wird er auch tagen, und so viel mehr und größere Freude wird daraus erwachsen." (S.20/24/27) Wudrians Anleitung zum Leiden erschien zum ersten mal 1627: neun Jahre nach dem Beginn des dreißigjährigen Krieges. Der Streit um Macht im Namen des Glaubens kam bei den 'wahren evangelischen Christen' als Gefährdung ihrer Balance zwischen Geschäftig- und Gewissenhaftigkeit an: der Zusammenhang zwischen Fleiß und Existenzsicherheit, Arbeit und Erfolg wurde unsicher. Der 'wahrhafte Christ' war umstellt von Bedrohungen, die sich der Kontrolle seiner Lebensführung entzogen. Das Ergebnis war Angst. Der Spezialist für die abendländische Geschichte der Angst, Jean Delumeau, weist darauf hin: "Angst ist die tiefe innere Unruhe bei einer unbestimmten Gefahr, Furcht dagegen ist objektbezogen." zit. nach: Das Abendland hat eine Höllenangst. Der französische Kulturhistoriker Jean Delumeau über die kollektiven Gefühlsqualen des Westens angesichts des Terrors. Interview mit Jacquelin Hénard; DIE ZEIT, 44/2001 (25. Oktober 2001) Dieser objektlosen Angst schrieb Wudrian in Predigten, Gebeten und 'Herzensseufzerlein' einen Ratgeber, "durch welche du in Kreuz und Leid und allen übrigen Anfechtungen des Lebens" zu bestehen lernst.(S.6) Nachdem die Reformation ihren Gläubigen im Namen Gottes den Sinn ihrer protestantischen Lebensführung als Weg zu autonomer Bürgerlichkeit eingeprägt hatte, müssen die Theologen hundert Jahre später derart lebenden Gläubingen im Namen desselben Gottes den Sinn von Scheitern und Leiden erklären. Zur Schule des Lebens gehörte nun auch die 'Kreuz-Schule'. In diesem Sinne ist das Buch von Wudrian eine aufschlussreiche Quelle: sie dokumentiert den Umgang der Protestanten mit ihrer Existenzangst. Zugleich machen die pastoralen Belehrungen verständlich, warum die derart gefährdeten Glaubensmenschen die Entlastung äußerer Feinde brauchten, die als Verursacher der namenlosen Ängste herhalten mussten. Delumeau zählt als 'Agenten Satans' auf: Muselmanen, Juden, Frauen, Hexen. (Jean Delumeau, Angst im Abendland. Die Geschichte kollektiver Ängste im Europa des 14. bis 18. Jahrhunderts) Delumeau weist im oben zitierten Interview darauf hin, dass die Angst geblieben ist. Und in diesem Zusammenhang ist bemerkenswert, dass Wudrians Selbstbehauptungsübungen in der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts für Neuauflagen marktfähig waren: die Strategien der Angstverschiebung waren offenbar auch in den Hochzeiten der industriellen Revolution nachgefragte Lebenshelfer.
