Hardcover. A gray hardcover book with a dust jacket and a mylar jacket. The title is in gilt lettering down the spine. The dust jacket is illustrated with a photo on the front cover and a photo on the back cover. The spine is a dark red with the lettering printed in white. The pasted and free end pages are illustrated. Pages: (7), 8-367, (1). There are 645 illustrations, and 117 are in color. In this, the first book on Indian metalwork, all the great surviving Mughal objects in gold, as well as enamel, silver, brass, bronze, gilt copper and the Deccani alloy known as bidri are reproduced. The majority have never been published and are unknown to the western connoisseur. Order, beauty, richness, restraint and sensuousness describe the essence of these works of art, produced for the sultans and rajahs of India during the fabulous Mughal age. In addition to being of the most outstanding technical refinement, the finest of these metal objects are among the most striking and poetic utilitarian items ever produced. In his lively and readable text, Zebrowski explains how their greatness derives from the mingling of Hindu and Muslim sensibilities, which is at the heart of Indo-Islamic culture. 1. Emirs & Sultans (712-1526 AD) -- 2. The Art of the Silversmith -- 3. The Art of the Goldsmith -- 4. Enamelling on Copper and Silver (Minai) -- 5. An Exotic Menagerie -- 6. Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. The first and most authoritative survey of Indian metalwork from the Mughal era (16th-19th centuries). Written by the late Mark Zebrowski (a leading scholar of Deccani and Mughal art), this volume documents the "mingling of Hindu and Muslim sensibilities" that created the unique forms of Indian vessels. It remains the primary reference for identifying and dating objects that are often mislabeled in auction catalogs. Key Chapters: Bidri Ware: The most comprehensive study of this distinct Deccani alloy (zinc mixed with copper/lead and inlaid with silver). Vessel Types: Detailed typology of lotas (water pots), huqqas (water pipes), pandans (betel boxes), and ewers. Technique: Explains the differences between Northern (Lahore/Delhi) and Deccani casting and decoration. Large Quarto (30 cm). 368 pages. 640 illustrations (117 in color). Black cloth with gilt lettering. Dustjacket has some shelf wear, edges of cover show some wear.

Metalwork has always been to India what ceramics are to China. During the fabled Mughal age, the craftsmen of the Sultans and Rajahs of India produced an astonishing variety of objects in gold and gold enamel, silver, brass, bronze, gilt copper and the Deccani alloy known as bidri. The finest of these are among the most striking and poetic utilitarian wares ever made, in addition to being of the most outstanding technical refinement. This, the first book on the metalwork of Mughal India, illustrates all the great surviving objects, the majority of which have never been published before and are unknown to the western connoisseur.

Add to basket296 pages : illustrations (some colour) ; 31 cm. A surprisingly large proportion of the masterpieces of Indian art was produced for the mysterious sultans of the Deccan, in the plateau region of southern India, during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Little research has been done either on the Deccani kingdoms themselves or on the arts they produced. At least three kingdoms, Bijapur, Golconda and Ahmadnagar, patronized outstanding painting, but because of strong cultural links with the Middle East, especially Safavid Iran, Deccani painting has long been confused with Persian, Turkish or Mughal court art. The art of the Deccan, however, achieved its own unique character, owing as much to the lush sensuality of South Indian art as to Persianate traditions. Dense compositions and intense colours create a lyrical romanticism, alien to both the sobriety of Mughal art and the calligraphic subtleties of Iran. Although, since the 1930s, several scholars have published individual Deccani paintings, this book is the first attempt to bring together all the major paintings and to assign them to schools and artists. It reconstructs the great period of art from the late sixteenth century until the 1680s when the Mughals conquered the Deccan. It also includes eighteenth and nineteenth-century paintings at Hyderabad under the Asafiya dynasty and, finally, painting at the provincial courts of the Hindu rajas and Muslim nawabs, tributaries of Hyderabad.

He worked for a year on the collections of Indian Art at the Musee Guimet, Paris, and later obtained a doctorate at Harvard University. His book Deccani Painting - the first comprehensive work on the exceptional paintings executed for the Sultans of the Deccan - appeared in 1983. He subsequently turned his attention to the decorative arts of the Mughal Empire and is the author of several articles on this largely unknown field. Gold, Silver and Bronze from Mughal India, the fruit of fifteen years of investigation, is the first book on the subject., Ill. bn: 528, Ill. colori: 167, Peso: 2440 gr.
