Originalauflage zweiter Abzug. - Stockfleckig, Gbrsp. - Mit der gedruckten Widmung an Ludwig I. von Baiern. - Zedlitz (1790 - 1862), Sohn eines fürstbischöflichen Amthauptmanns, war ursprünglich für den Priesterstand bestimmt, verließ jedoch 1806 die Klosterschule und trat in ein Husarenregiment ein, wurde Oberleutnant und Ordonnanzoffizier und nahm 1809 an den Schlachten von Regensburg, Aspern und Deutsch Wagram teil. Auf Wunsch der Familie nahm er seinen Abschied und ging zur Bewirtschaftung der eigenen Güter nach Ungarn. 1810 kam er als Kammerherr nach Wien und verkehrte dort in literarischen Zirkeln; Franz Grillparzer gehörte zu seinen Freunden. Z. schrieb 1836 den Text für die Kaiserhymne auf Ferdinand I. Seit 1837 als Publizist im Dienst der Staatskanzlei, verfaßte er österreichfreundliche Artikel für die "Augsburger Zeitung" und war auch in diplomatischer Mission tätig. Z. war sowohl als Lyriker (Totenkränze, 1808) wie auch als (von den Spaniern beeinflußter) Dramatiker erfolgreich (4 Bde., 1830-46). Von seinen Balladen wurde Die nächtliche Heerschau (1832) besonders bekannt. Sein beliebtes, in Balladen gehaltenes Kriegstagebuch Soldaten-Büchlein (2 Bde., 1848-50) erschien unter dem Eindruck der Revolution. (DBE).
