Exemplar Nr. XXIV. Dem Werk Der Welsche Gast, das hier in der Bilderhandschrift vorgelegt wird, ist in der deutschen Literatur der Stauferzeit nichts Vergleichbares an die Seite zu stellen. Sein Verfasser, Thomasin von Zerclaere, der aus einer lombardischen Patrizierfamilie stammte und als durchgebildeter clericus am Hof des Patriarchen von Aquileia tätig war, hat Anfang des 13. Jahrhunderts das Werk in einem Deutsch eigenen Gepräges niedergeschrieben. In zehn Büchern breitet er eine Gebrauchsethik aus, die er als welschen, d. h. lombardisch-romanischen Gast in deutschsprachige Lande sendet. Es ist eine Tugendlehre, die einen Aufruf zum Kreuzzug einschließt und vor allem für wackere Ritter, untadelige Ritterfrauen und schriftkundige Kleriker bestimmt ist. In einem christlich durchleuchteten Stoizismus werden ständische Regeln des Verhaltens in einer Vielfalt von Möglichkeiten angeboten. Nicht zufällig hat das beredte Werk in reicher, oft bebilderter Überlieferung bis in das späte 15. Jahrhundert gewirkt. Der Bilderzyklus der Heidelberger Handschrift geht auf eine wahrscheinlich von Thomasin selbst vorgenommene Redaktion zurück. Die dem didaktischen Anliegen des Werkes dienenden Miniaturen werden gedeutet, daraus entstehende Fragen des Verhältnisses zum Text behandelt und stilistische Probleme erörtert. Es ist anzunehmen, dass die Handschrift 1256 in der Gegend von Scheyern entstanden ist.
