See images for condition. About the book >.>.> There is a wonderful mismatch between the imposed order of geometry and the liberty of gesture in Toby Zi…egler's paintings and sculptures. The two modes of making may seem oppositional, but at times their alliance can be a more precise way of articulating the world, as experience is, of course, neither entirely structured nor utterly visceral. In the painting The Admiral's House a section of sky quoted from a Constable painting is mapped out in patterns that recall the tiling of Mosques, like a vain and extreme attempt to extract a galleon or a human face from cloud formations and fix it as an enduring image. Technology, Ziegler seems to be reminding us, is an algorithmic approximation of the chaos of the universe and not the guiding force it sometimes appears to be. The sunsets in the diptych The Subtle Power of Spiritual Abuse, then, might be a comparison of before and aftermath, of vastness and its mapping, while the poplars that hold the centre of The Admiral's House with gravitas.

The centrepiece of this exhibition is a vast installation featuring a new bo…dy of aluminium sculptures alongside readymades including a weather balloon and a mechanical bull. Working from found images sourced from the internet or publications, Ziegler's practice starts with computer aided 3 D design and evolves through hand modelling, to confront the supposed flawlessness of digital processes with the idiosyncrasies of the handmade. The process also incorporates art historical references and culminates in monumental sculptures composed of oxidized aluminium triangles. Their scale stages an interplay between hollowness and mass, creating large volumes out of a thin skin of metal and playing with perception, perspective and the mapping of constructions in space. Included are two pages of expanation about both the artist and the program. One of the pages is an excerpt from Georges Batailles' "Vision of Excess." Still in the original box and tissue paper as shipped by Momart, Ltd. Each year Momart commissions a leading British artist to produce a multiple. The entire series, of which this is only one, features works by artists as varied as Howard Hodgkin, Lucian Freud, David Hockney, Ron Mueck, Sarah Lucas, Barry Flanagan, and many others, and is included in several museum collections.
